Chapter 7 • Trouble

I feel the cool, hard ground underneath my fallen body. The dead grass tickles my arms and legs as wind whistles by. The screams have stopped. The monstrous roars have stopped. Everything is quiet.

A sudden surge of excruciating pain spreads through every bone in my body, causing me to yell a terrifying scream. Then, everything that just happened to me comes back on a flash; Lucy, the girl with pink hair, the monstrous mouse.

I attempt to stand up, to find Lucy, to get revenge on the wicked woman and her rat, but I fail. I stare at my burning feet as I look at the bruises and dried blood laying there and on the soil. The pain isn't my only concern.

The blood is already dried? I ask myself in my thoughts. How long have I been unconscious?

My frail body is weaker than usual. I attempt to stand up, but I fail once again. I look around for any sign of a human being, whether they are good or bad. Even if it's Erza.

Suddenly, realization strikes me in the heart. I lost Lucy. She was right there, right under my nose, and I let her slip by. And that girl with the dark pink hair seems dangerous. Is Lucy okay? Will she do without me? I have no idea where she is now, and I'm fearing for her safety. She can be hurt right this second, crying for help, but I can't even get up.

"Why?" I cry in agony. "Why am I so useless? Why can't I help my family when they need it?" My screams echo across the forest and my heart feels like it ripped into pieces. I smash my fist onto the rocky soil, but my lack of strength only results in my hand being cut deeply. I wince as the dark blood moderately trickles down into the soil, the wind causing the wound to sting even more.

I can't control my feelings. I start to sniffle, and the sniffle turns into tears, and the tears turn into a wail. I am crying a cry that I can't control, my mouth open, making gurgling noises that sound as if an animal is slowly, terribly, dying. The tears flow, and flow, and flow, and it cleans off the blood from my cheeks from the accident. It seems like the world has finally crashed down on me, after all of this time.

My eyesight begins to become cloudy because of the tears coating my eyes. I don't know what to do, since I can't even stand on my own two feet. My heels are still horribly bruised, and just standing on them would make the cuts open wide once again. I see my brown sack about a meter away from me. I reach for it with all of my might, panting. I roll over onto my stomach, and my ribs sting. I broke them too, didn't I? Finally, I feel the soft bag slip under my fingertips. I clench it tightly, and pull it over. I look inside if there's anything I could use to get out of this mess.

The flashlight, clothes, all things that I don't need or can't use for the time being. I rummage through frantically, my heart beating loudly and rapidly. If there's nothing in here to help me get up, I'll have to wait until my body heals up and I'm able to move again. But how long will that take?

Finally, I find a bottle of water I packed just in case. I struggle to open the cap with my shaking fingers, and once I do, I toss it to the ground a few centimeters away. I gulp, and slowly take in the water, the cool drink giving me relief and content. I get some strength back, but what I really need is light.

I finish the bottle and crumple it up. I try to stand up again. I place both of my hands on the hard, rigid ground, and in push-up formation, I attempt to get myself up onto my feet again. My body doesn't move, and I fall back down, weary and out of breath. I have to get up. I have to save Lucy.
