Chapter 16 • Going Home

The music of the village the next day blares through the air into the forest. The melodies are so loud and beautiful that I know the creatures are dancing in harmony to the beat. The beasts remain in their demon forms as they socialize with each other and the fellow members of Fairy Tail. Young children are dancing with each other, hand in hand. The atmosphere is a lot more light then it was just the day before. After all of the struggles, all of the suffering, I have the satisfaction knowing that the heavy duty is done. That's a feeling that I missed from the harder assignments. Maybe I'll be taking more S-Class missions? I consider. It is definitely a possibility to keep in mind.

"Don't move," a younger nurse says as she places the last of the solution onto my back wound. I have bandages all over my body, covering my scrapes from unhealthy bacteria. She healed my jaw just before and put a brace on my destroyed arm. I say my thanks.

"How can I repay you?"

"No need to. This is my job, and this is the least I can do for you after you helped to get rid of the curse." She pats my back. "Now go have some fun and eat. I can see you need both," she says as she examines my bony body and eye rings from stress. I giggle and agree wholeheartedly.

"I've been through a lot in one day. I totally need something to relax my mind right now." I get up and stride to my friends at the wooden table to eat. Before I do, however, I turn back to her. "You know the old nurse? Where is she?" I want to express my gratitude to her one more time.

The girl becomes confused. "Who?" Her eyes show that she really doesn't know what I'm talking about.

I illustrate, using my hands to gesture what she looks like. "She's about this tall, is really old with a lot of wrinkles on her face. Has her gray hair in a bun? At least, that's what her human form looks like."

The girl is still not processing what I'm saying. "I'm sorry, but I don't know what you're talking about. I'm the only nurse here."

Goosebumps form on my arms. If she is the only nurse, then who was the feeble woman who cared for me? Who injected medicine into my body? She was probably just trying to help and posed herself as a nurse, I decide. That may be why I experienced side effects after taking whatever she gave me. She might have accidentally added to much of the cure onto my wounds. I play it off coolly as if I have been mistaken myself.

"Nevermind then," I utter, and the girl laughs weakly. "Thank you again." I head to the table where my fellow guild members sit. Gray and Natsu eat messily while Erza and Lucy chew their food slowly and carefully. I eat right in between the two styles, grabbing meat, grains, and vegetables and placing them on my plate as I digest it.

Lucy starts bickering with Natsu about something trivial, making me think about how much I want to to leave Galuna Island. I miss Makarov, Mira, Cana, and every single Fairy Tail member. And although I'm surprised I do, I even miss Laxus as well. The guild is feeling so foreign to me, and I need to get back soon. For the first time in a while, I'm homesick.

I watch Natsu jump up and start eating the fire from the large candles surrounding the scenery as Gray tells him to stop. In less than a minute, they get into another fight before Erza stops it abruptly. I laugh as I watch, then think about the events from yesterday. My emotions instantly deteriorate into negativity as I remember how I failed my mission.
