It was decided that I would stay with Katherine, seeing as, at least the way they put it, the accommodations would be the most suitable for a "lady." Katherine took me home to the rooms her father had gotten her when he all but disowned her. (He wasn't happy with her, but he didn't want her sleeping on the streets.)
We went inside, and Katherine showed me to her guest room and told me to make myself comfortable; she would go prepare something for the two of them to eat. (She had refused her father's offer for servants.) I sat on the edge and unpinned my hat from my hair. Then I sat back a bit and looked around the room, taking in the room that would be mine for who knows how long. It was a squarish room with mauve painted walls and white moulding along the walls edges. The furniture was carved dark wood, and the furniture set included a bureau, a dresser, a desk, a chair, and a bed. The room had electricity instead of gas lights, which was a very modern detail.
Katherine poked her head in and said that dinner was ready. I got up and followed her down the hall to a small dining area. The table was laid with a meal consisting of ham and bread, clearly walking the line between a meal for the rich and a meal for the poor, showing Katherine's belonging to both sides of the equation in one way or another.
We ate quietly at first, but then Katherine began to speak.
"I'm glad you're here. Race keeps talking about you, and some of the boys thought he was making you up to impress them. They couldn't believe he had spoken to a girl who actually said something back to him," She said.
"Wow, I knew I was awesome, but I didn't realize I was that awesome," I replied, laughing. More seriously, I continued, "Are you serious? Did he talk about me that much?"
Katherine nodded, and, to be honest, I was shocked and touched.
"Is there anything else I should know? I want to have all the best information on all of them to share with Sami when I get home. Whenever that is," I said.
"Alright. Where do I start?" Katherine said. "Let's see. Well, Les has 'a girl' as he puts it. Her name's Sally. She's eleven and the sweetest thing."
"Wait, Sally is real? I always thought he was making her up to impress Jack or something," I responded. She confirmed her realness, and proceeded to tell me just about everything about just about everyone.
"If my father finds out you are staying with me, he will invite us both to dinner. Just thought I should warn you about that," Katherine said. I took the warning gladly.
By then it had started to get late. Katherine went and got me a nightgown, which I brought into my room and changed into, undoing the elaborate updo that I was told to wear by the costume team.I switched my hair into a braid and got into the large, warm bed, ready to be carried away into my dreams.
