"Knock knock," I heard a voice say as I opened my eyes and found myself laying on the floor covered with a blanket, Jack smirking while standing in the doorway to the parlor. I remembered what had happened the night before, with this moment tying it to one not so long ago but still very far away.

"This has got to stop happening," I half groaned and half chuckled. I sat up cleanly and, suddenly curious and confused, spoke.

"Wait a minute. Shouldn't you be working? Why are you here?" I asked.

"I came with a note that one of those Delanceys kindly threw at me to give to you and Katherine and those cousins of hers. You're the first one I saw, so I woke you to take it. Enjoy your cryptic message and a Merry Christmas to all of you. Also, tell Katherine that I am gonna  try and stop back around noon," he said, leaving me alone with the mystery message. Naturally,I opened it.

Dear daughter, nieces, and Miss Elizabeth,

You are invited(I read that as ordered.) to my mansion for Christmas Dinner at precisely 6:00 pm. Each of you must follow my instructions exactly, for they differ from girl to girl.(Ooh,spooky.)

My daughter:

Bring that rat boy of yours, but clean him up first. And mind you watch what he tries to take.

My niece Harriet :

You are permitted to bring one of those rats if you would like to, but my daughter has other friends who are much more suitable dinner partners. May I suggest(Once again, read forcefully.) one of them instead?

My niece Eleanor:

The same option stands for you as does for your sister. However if you must bring that rat, leave his tail behind. I'm sure he will survive one night without the other.

Miss Elizabeth:

I can almost guarantee that you are the one reading this letter right now. You bring that rat that you've been running about with, and do try anything. You're not fooling me with your tricks, girl.  Don't ruin my daughter's scrap of reputation with your vain follies.

I shall see you at 6:00 pm, at my mansion.

Sincerely,

Joseph Pulitzer

I read and reread the letter. It seemed a bit more ominous than it should, but after consulting with Katherine, I discovered that he wrote spooky-sounding semi-threatening notes rather frequently. We showed the semi threats to the sisters, and decided that we would spare as many boys as possible from the tedious event, with the cousins deciding to bring Darcy and another friend of Katherine's, Bill.

At around five o clock, we went and found the boys for this event of mild torture. (We explained it all to Jack when he showed up around noon, and he said he'd explain to Race, so they at least mostly knew what was going on.)

We met up with Bill and Darcy, who had just met Harriet and Eleanor, but were getting along with  them nicely, and we dragged ourselves to the land of stiffly polite company.
