I walked into the parlor where Katherine was sitting with a girl who looked about eleven, whom I figured was Sally. I politely said hi to the little girl, who was wearing a white satin dress with a lavender sash, and introduced myself before sitting down next to Katherine, who was wearing what I was wearing, but in blue.
"The boys are upstairs getting ready and practicing manners. Les is really excited, and he is drilling them tougher than a general up their. This is so important to him. I pulled out these dresses especially for him; I don't even wear these things to 'fancy' dinners with my father," Katherine whispered to me.
We sat around, with Sally asking Katherine about Jack, who apparently was her hero. After what seemed like forever, the boys finally came downstairs and formally greeted us girls, mostly to please Les.
At Les's eyeball messaging insistence, the boy, minus Davey, each invited one of us girls to come to dinner with them. We politely and formally accepted, although I could see a poorly suppressed smirk on all three of the older boys' faces. I gently glared the smirks off of their faces, and we went into the dining room.
In the dining room, we found a slightly uncomfortable looking Specs pretending to be a butler. I got an eyeball message from him that seemed to be him just thinking about helping Les and also getting free food. The food was carried in by two more newsies who also just seemed to want to help out Les and also get free food. (They are teenage boys, do you really blame them for wanting to get to the part where they eat food?)
The eating portion passed and Katherine gave the three boys the go ahead and eat everything you want look, which made them practically attack the food as we went into a another room. (Once again, they are teenage boys. What did you expect them to do with free food?) The room was one I hadn't seen before. It had a wooden floor and a record player. It was basically a tiny ballroom.
Katherine started the record in the player and some sort of fancy song began to play. Les very formally offered his hand to Sally and the two of them began to dance. Les was shorter than her, but they were so happy to be spending an evening together that it didn't matter. Jack whispered something to Davey, Katherine, and Race, and Katherine grabbed three chairs, which she sat in with Jack and Davey.
Race walked over to me and said, "Well, there aren't any more chairs and there is no point in just standing here. Why don't we try to dance. Last time we did, we were flocked by kids from a school newspaper."
"I would love to," I said.
