We ran to Katherine's house, knowing that I needed time to get back, especially since it was going to be a handwritten journey. I changed back into the clothes I came in, and as I did, an idea came to me. I owned my costume, so I took a scissor and cut one of the decorative skirt buttons off. I headed back into the main room, where Katherine, her cousins, Bill, Darcy, Race, and the other newsies were all gathered to say goodbye. I said goodbye to each one, and most of them left because it was crowded. Soon, only Jack, Katherine, and Race were left.
"Well," I said, " I guess it's my turn to leave you guys. I will miss all of you when I get home. Life just won't be the same for me. But I will never forget you."
It was time for me to write. Katherine handed me a notebook and pencil, and I sat down to write. Katherine and Jack left the room after coming to some silent agreement with Race, and we became the final two in the room.
"I don't wanna leave you, but we both know I have to go home. I am lucky enough that I get to take something to remember you by with me, and I wanted you to have something to remember me," I said to him, producing my skirt button. He took it and gently put it in his pocket.
"Thank you. Now, don't forget to give that Sami those notes on me. She needs to be just about perfect as me, remember that now," he said, tucking his sadness at our parting into his joke.
"I think you mean perfect,"I said to him, before actually starting to write.
"Come on, Ellie! I wanna see the cast list!" Sami begged as I collected my books from my locker.
Finally, I made it to the present. I turned to Race.
"I'll never forget you. I've said something along those lines at least seven times, but only because I mean it. You will have a place in my heart as my first love," I said, and kissed his cheek before finishing this sentence and heading home.
