Love Interest: Severus SnapeIf there was one part of any story you loved, it was the underdog. The one who everyone doubted, then rose to occasion when we all expected them to fall. And Severus Snape, was as underdog as it got.
As much as the whole school loved the Marauders, they always bullied and picked on the boy, and there's nothing admirable about a bunch of bullies, in your humble opinion. You pitied Severus, but above all, he was much nicer than everyone thought. He might go about his business with a gloomy face, but he had just as much heart and personality as anyone else. He was a good friend, and your persistent crush.
No matter how many times you heard people talk about his greasy hair and unkept appearance, you still found him winsome. His personality was, at least, which is more than half of Hogwarts. Good looks could be deceitful.
You and Severus sat in the corner of your common room one school night, finishing up your homework. You were near completion of your Transfiguration essay, while he made notes in his Advanced Potions book, as he regularly did.
"What are you writing?," you ask conversationally. His focus remains on the page.
"Just a little incantation I came up with nothing too... exciting." That was an interesting thing you noticed about his speech. He might speed up at certain parts, not taking a break in parts people usually would, and then drastically slow down towards the rn of his phrase. You couldn't think of a single other person that did that.
"Uh huh." You just finished the last word on the parchment, immediately tying up your ink pouch and gathering your stuff. "I'll be back."
"Wonderful." You ignore his sarcasm, returning your belongings in the dormitory. When you've reached the bottom of the stairs, his attention had been caught be his two other friends, Avery and Mulciber.
"Come on, Severus!," Mulciber taunted.
"Yeah, let's go practice those curses!," joined the other
"Not tonight. Maybe another time." Snape resumed writing in his Potions book. Avery rolled his eyes.
"Forget it mate," he said, turning to Mulciber. "He's no fun, anyways." The boys trotted off, spooking some first years on the way out.
"Tossers," you mutter, before returning to your seat across from him. "By the way... happen to notice anything in your bag today?" For the first time since that afternoon, he looked up from his work at you.
"Notice anything?" You casually shrug.
"I'm sure you would have by now."
"I don't know... let me see." Severus cautiously peeked inside the satchel that rested by his chair. He pulled out a somewhat discolored box about the size of a chessboard, flipping it over in his hand a few times.
"For you."
"For me?," he asked.
"Consider it an early Christmas gift. You were complaint yesterday how those two gits accidentally broke your set of vials. Professor Slughorn said he had been getting rid of some intermediate potion sets, one of which he gave to me. I haven't much use of it so, I figured it's better off with you." To your satisfaction, he looked bewildered and somewhat pleased.
"Thank you, (y/n)."
"Don't mention it," you smiled, winking at him. To your satisfaction, a slight blush creeped in his cheeks, reaching the tips of his ears. "Goodnight," you said, moving past him towards the dormitories once more.
~Two weeks later~
"(Y/n)!," you heard your name called, before getting on one of the invisibly-drawn carriages to the Hogwarts Express. It was the day you'd return home for the holidays, and had been somewhat disappointed at Snape for not showing up to at least say goodbye. Which is why you had not been anticipating to see him again until you returned for school.
"Hello, Snape." You made it a point that whenever you called him by his last name that you were feeling indignant towards him. He was heaving, after probably running across the grounds to meet you.
"This is... for you," he said between breaths. Any feeling of annoyance or displeasure washed away. You took the tiny, wrapped gift from his hand into your own. "I've been looking for it all morning. I think Mulciber and Avery hid them, and-," he paused to gasp for air. You took a step forward, wrapping your arms around his neck, him leaning down under your force. Before he had begun to hug you back, you gave him a small peck on the cheek, and skipped away towards the carriage. A girl from your year helped you up, scooting over for you to sit.
"Snape gave you a present, I see," she smirked. You both looked down at the boy, looking at his shoes to avoid your gaze. The Slytherin girl gave a light chuckle. "My friend called it, I'll give him credit for that. Sirius, you know him? He begged me to check to see if there were any possibilities."
"Possibilities?," you asked.
"Any chance he's crazy about you. And I checked. He's very fond, but seeing as it is, no one needs arithmancy to tell you that."
