Caroline's POV
I have been back in Maryville for a little over two months and this week is Founder's day week. For a whole week we celebrate out town and how it was founded way back when. Greer and I haven't been able to go on our date because of me having to plan everything with my mom and dad and he has been working constantly on things around the plantation.
The mayor has gotten a carnival to come to town and it stays for the week. I haven't been to one of these in a long ass time. My mom always wanted me to be in the founder's day pageant but I wasn't here and it never appealed to me.
"CAROLINE!" I run downstairs with just my sports bra and shorts on.
"Yes?" I look at her and she looks at me with her widened.
"Greer is here to see you..." I turn my head and see Greer standing there with his hands in his pockets. "I'll let you two talk."
My mom walks off and I turn my body and attention to Greer. "What are you doing here?"
"Will you go to the carnival tonight with me and go to the ball with me?" I smile.
"Well, I will have to check my schedule to see if I am free..." He frowns. "I'm playing. I would love to go with you."
He smiles. "You go get dressed. I am going to talk to your mom."
I nod and run upstairs. I quickly put on a spaghetti strap crop top and high waisted shorts. I slide on my Converse. I grab my phone and make my way downstairs when I hear my mom and Greer talking.
"Someone signed her up for the pageant. I don't know who but I know it's someone who doesn't like her." What the fucking hell?!
"Fuck. She ain't going to like that." My mom sighs.
"She can't back out now. I don't even know if she can do the events in the pageant." What are the events though?
"They have to barrell race, pick cotton, a special talent, and do some dance with a guy of their choice. The last event they have to dress to impress and it's supposed to go down at the ball where they will pick the winner."
I walk into the kitchen. "If I do this will the town except me or are they going to shun me away? I haven't barrell raced in so long nor have a I picked fucking cotton. I don't have a special talent and I sure as hell don't wear dresses."
"We know that, Caroline. You can't back out so we are going to have to go get you a dress or two. Greer can show you how to pick the cotton and help you with your barrel racing. We will find your special talent." I stare at my mom. "You can do this, Delta. It's not hard. Back in my day, we had to more hands on thing like changing the oil in your vehicle an dlet me tell you that is something my daddy never taught me how to do. "
I snort. "Why didn't daddy teach you?"
She laughs. "Your daddy and I didn't start dating until after that and Gannon couldn't even change his own oil."
I snort. "So I have a week to do this?" My mom nods. "Well let's go have my night of fun before I have to kill myself."
I grab Greer and drag him outside to his truck. We get in and drive to the carnival. I look over at Greer as he pulls the key out of the ignition. "I'm so ready!!! LET'S GO!"
I quickly get out of the truck and so does he. I walk to the other side and grab his hand. I drag him to a ticket booth and we get the bracelets. I hold on to Greer's hand as we walk around looking at everything.
