"Aren't you supposed to be out in the audience with Greer and dad?" She nods

"Aren't you supposed to be out in the audience with Greer and dad?" She nods.

"I came to wish you luck out there. It's a big crowd and I want you to do your best even though you are dressed like you're going to a funeral." I smile. "You look good and beautiful! Go have fun."

My mom kisses my cheek and leaves the room. I go look in the mirror and smile. Mary Anne, the mayor's wife, gave us the rules and made it clear that there will be three rounds so we will need three songs. Which I already picked out.

I leave the dressing room and stand backstage. All of the girls look nervous except me. "First up we have Blanche Haywood!"

We go through all of the girls and of course, I am last. All the girls sang a pop song of sorts. They call my name and I walk out on stage and everyone goes quiet. I stand in front of the microphone. The music to You Lie by The Band Perry starts playing.

"It ain't complicated
Well, I've grown to hate it
I never liked the taste of crow but baby I ate it
They tried to warn me
They said that you were ornery
So don't bring me those big brown eyes and tell me that you're sorry
Well you might as well throw gasoline on a fire
The way you lie..."

The crowd goes wild as my voice sounds amazing with the song. Everyone stands up and claps as I continue to sing. The song comes to the end and I stop singing and everyone claps. I smile and bow. Mary Anne walks out on stage and the audience quiets down.

"I need the other contestants to come out, please." The other girls come out and stand beside me. I look down at my leg and see the bruise growing. "One of you will be eliminated and then the rest will go on to round two." A little girl runs up on the stage and hands Mary Anne a piece of paper then runs off. Mary Anne looks down at the paper and then at the audience. "The person who is getting eliminated is...Cricket Irwin!"

Everyone looks at Cricket as she walks off stage. "At the end of the second round, three of the six girls remaining will be eliminated." The crowd stays quiet. "Let's continue with the competition."

Everyone walks to the back of the stage and sits in chairs. Everyone goes and sings again and then three girls I don't know gets eliminated leaving me, Blanche, and some girl. The girl I don't know goes first and messes up big time. She finishes on a high note and comes to sit back down. Blanche goes up and sings some new pop song but she sounded like shit. She could've chosen a different song. It's finally my turn. I go up to the microphone and the music starts for If I Die Young by The Band Perry.

"If I die young bury me in satinLay me down on a bed of rosesSink me in the river at dawnSend me away with the words of a love songUh oh uh ohLord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my motherShe'll know I'm safe with you whenShe stands under my colours, oh andLife ain't always what you think it oughta be, noAin't even grey, but she buries her babyThe sharp knife of a short life,Well, I've had just enough timeIf I die young bury me in satin.Lay me down on a bed of rosesSink me in the river at dawnSend me away with the words of a love songThe sharp knife of a short life,Well I've had just enough timeAnd I'll be wearing white when I come into your kingdomI'm as green as the ring on my little cold fingerI've never known the lovin' of a manBut it sure felt nice when he was holding my handThere's a boy here in town says he'll love me foreverWho would have thought forever could be severed byThe sharp knife of a short life,Well I've had just enough timeSo put on your best boys and I'll wear my pearlsWhat I never did is doneA penny for my thoughts, oh no I'll sell them for a dollarThey're worth so much more after I'm a gonerAnd maybe then you'll hear the words I been singin'Funny when you're dead how people start listenin'If I die young bury me in satinLay me down on a bed of rosesSink me in the river at dawnSend me away with the words of a love songUh oh (uh oh)The ballad of a doveGo with peace and loveGather up your tears, keep 'em in your pocketSave 'em for a time when your really gonna need 'em ohThe sharp knife of a short life,Well I've had just enough timeSo put on your best boys, and I'll wear my pearls..."

I finish and the crowd stays silent for a few seconds and then goes crazy. Blanche and the other girl come stand beside me and Mary Anne comes on stage with a piece of paper. "What an amazing show today!" The crowd goes silent. Mary Anne looks at the paper. "In Third place, Rebecca Dean." The crowd lightly cheers. "In second place...Blanche Haywood." Blanche whines a little. "And obviously in first place...Caroline Grant!!!"

The crowd goes wild and we get ribbons. We leave the stage and go back to the dressing room. I pack up all my things and change back into my shirt and shorts. I go out into the hallway to see Greer and my parents. My mom pulls me into a hug and kisses my cheek. She pulls away and my dad gives me a quick hug. Greer pulls me into a tight hug and kisses me.

"I told you that you could do it!" I smile and kiss him. We pull away from each other. "We have a ball to get to."

"That we do! We need to get you ready, Caroline. It's the last big event and then they crown the queen!" My mom squeals with happiness. I playfully roll my eyes.

"Well let's get this shit show on the road!" We leave and go out to our vehicles. I climb into Greer's truck as he gets in. I close the door and buckle up. "I can't believe I won!"

"I know, babe, I know! You were amazing up there!"
