I said hey hey workin' man workin' man like me
I ain't never been on welfare and that's one place I won't be
I'll be back workin' as long as my two hands are fit to use
I'll get a little bit stoned this weekend and sing a little bit of these workin' man blues*unedited*
Caroline's POV
"Caroline, come on you only have a minute and a half! Pick that fucking cotton, babe!" I groan as I continue picking the cotton as fast as I can. "Come on!
The timer goes off and I fall to the ground. I groan as I look at my bleeding fingers. "You're going to get chiggers if you don't get up."
I quickly get up and hand him my bag of cotton. "This shit weighs a ton. I bet you're glad you don't have to hand pick it."
"You have to at least have fifty pounds to be in the clear. Come on let's get back to we can get LuLu ready for the barrels." I nod and go climb on Barret. We go back to the stable and put the horse up and then go to the barn. Greer puts the bag of cotton on the scale thing and sixty pounds shows on the digital screen. "Look you're going to do alright."
I roll my eyes. "They put me in there to make me fail and make a fool of myself."
Greer chuckles. "You will be fine."
"Let's get this shit over with so I can go find me a dress."
Greer and I go to the stables. We walk in and see Blanche and Beau laying half naked on a pile of hay. I clear my throat and they look at us.
"Don't mind us, we just came for my horse..." I grab Greers hand and drag him into a stable. I walk to LuLu and stroke her mane. Greer saddles her up. I look at Greer. "Are you going to get a horse or you just going to walk beside me?"
"I will get one." I nod.
I get on LuLu and grab her reigns. LuLu and I walk out. I look over to see Beau raking up some hay. Greer walks out and goes to get a horse. Beau walks to me and I look down at him.
"What do you want, Beau?" He rolls his eyes.
"You know, I thought you were so pure and inncoent but you're not. You're just like every girl in town." I snort.
"Don't be mad about me not having sex with you. Nothing big and round has penetrated my vagina and it's going to stay that way." He rolls his eyes. Greer walks out with Maybelle and I smile at him. "Let's go, Greer."
Greer and I leave the stable and make our way down to where the barrels are set up. I sit on LuLu and just stare at the rusty barrels. "Are you ready?"
I look over at Greer and shake my head. "I'm not going to have a good time. You know how long it's been since I've done this?"
"Yes, I know but you have to try." I groan.
After barrel racing practice we put up the horses and made our way back to the house to get my mom. My check everywhere for my mom when I bump into Dixie. "Sorry."
"It's fine. Do you know where my mom is?" She lightly smiles.
"She is upstairs with your dad." I roll my eyes and fake gag. I move away from her an drun upstairs. Moans fill the upstairs and I bang on their bedroom door.
"MOM, LET'S GET THIS OVER WITH!" The moans stop and I go back downstairs. I find Greer half asleep on the couch. I walk around the furniture and sit on his chest. His eyes shoot open and he looks up at me.
"Why are you sitting on my chest?" I stand up and Greer grabs my waist and pulls me down on top of him. He kisses my neck. "Is your mom coming down yet?"
I shrug. "She and dad were up there doing the nasty." Greer chuckles. "It's not funny. It's nasty."
"Oh, so is it going to be nasty when we do it?" I look at him.
"If we do it. You could break myhear between now and then." Greer rolls his eyes.
"Guys, I am ready. Let's go." Greer and I get off the couch and walk to my mom.
"So how was the sausage mother?" My mother turns bright red as we walk outside. We go get in my moms vehicle and I climb in the front seat while Greer gets in the back. We leave the house and start our journey to Jackson.
It's only about an hour drive from Maryville. "Mom, were you a virgin when you and daddy started dating?"
I fidget with the end of my shirt. "Somewhat."
I look over at her. "What do you mean by that?"
"Well, there was things I did with Gannon but yes my vagina was never penatrated by a dick." I snort and try to hold back a laugh. I look at Greer and see he is uncomfortable with the whole conversation. "Why do you want to know?"
"I don't know." She glances over at me and then back at the road.
"You're first time should be when you are absolutely ready. It doesn't matter who you lay down with as long as you are ready for whatever happens after. You could get pregnant with or without a condom. Be safe about it. You're only twenty one. I'm too young to be a grandma." I snort.
"Mom, you're almost forty." She glares at me.
"Okay and? I had you when I was eighteen. I didn't get to do the things I wanted in life because I had you. I got married to your father because I got pregnant with you. I don't regret it but there are still things I want to do that I haven't." Well fuck.
"So you're saying because you laid down with dad and made me that you couldn't do things you wanted? So are you saying I was a mistake at one point in time?" She takes a deep breath.
"I didn't mean it like that, Caroline." I look out the window and see the trees pass us by. "Caroline, you changed my life before I could grasp anything and figure out who I was. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. I gave you an honest answer."
I don't reply but keep my eyes on the trees. My phone buzzes twice and I pull it out of my back pocket. I open it up to see two messages.
FROM KNOX: I'm on my way home now.
FROM GREER: You okay?
TO KNOX: Okay, just tell my dad.
TO GREER: I'm fine.
Before I know it, we pull up to a dress shop in Jackson. We all get out and go inside. My mom shoves me in a dressing room and starts putting dresses in there. I try on every dress and tell her no more than she liked. Greer brings me some dresses and my mom comes back with more.
"You need a dress for your special talent. Greer already told me you're singing so make sure you are choosing wisely!" I roll my eyes. Stupid Founder's Pageant.
I try on more dresses and cringe at some of them until I come to a black one. It's perfect. I quickly take it off and hang it in the keep pile. I find another cute black one and put it with the other. I quickly get dressed and walk out of the dressing room with the dresses in my hand. My mom walks to me and I show her the dresses and she nods.
We go check out and get back in the car. We start heading back home. I hum along to the music as Greer slowly falls asleep in the back seat. My mom bounces around in her seat as the music fills the car.
"Why did you choose the black ones?" I look over at her.
"Because it's gonna be their funeral when I am done with them."
