Rilynn's POV
Two more people were admitted yesterday. I've started to wonder if River was even going to help. I haven't heard from him in days. The beatings just get worse. Colby and I haven't seen each other since the day we started all this. They've kept me locked away in a room that I've never seen before. A small, dark room. No windows. No bed. Just me and the big steel door. I've lost count of the days. I haven't eaten. They bring me a tray of the same mushy oatmeal but I don't touch it. I just sit in this corner and listen. I listen for the cries of newcomers. I listen for Abby. She hasn't been around much but I listen for her soft laughter. Although, I don't hear it I still listen. I often times only here the screams from Sarah. She's locked away here too. I'm sure she did something crazy to them just to keep Abby, Josh and Lily safe. I listen to every little noise that happens. I try to listen for Colby. He doesn't go down without a fight. He never will. I haven't heard anything that could even be him fighting back.I was brought out of thought by the sound of footsteps. More than one person. I heard a girl. Pleading. I heard the sound of one of the heavy doors opening and closing. I listened as the footsteps slowly faded away.
"Psst." I look around realizing I wasn't going to see anything. "Psst." I listen for another moment. "Is there a Rilynn Winters here?" I heard the voice.
"Maybe there is. Who's asking?" I finally spoke.
"Officer Traci Hopkins. I'm undercover. I'm here to investigate with my partner, Officer Rickie O'Donnell. We're both wearing wires. We shutting this place down."
River's POV
Hadlee and I sat in my room. Waiting. It's been days. Hadlee stayed with us. She's been staying in Rilynn's room. I have had to make sure that everything went right when the sheriff's station calls."What if this doesn't work?" I looked at Hadlee. Her face full of worry.
"What?" I gave her a dirty look.
"What if it doesn't work? Are we wasting our time? What if Rilynn got out? It's been 3 days. We haven't heard anything. How do we know that the police are doing anything?" I got up off the bed and stepped closer to her.
"That is my sister out there. I am going to do everything in my power to make sure she gets out of that hell hole safe." I spoke in a stern tone. She just stared at me. Hadlee's phone began ringing. She pulled it out of her pocket.
McPherson County Police Department.
"Answer it!" I whisper-yelled. Hadlee slowly answered the phone. Putting it on speaker.
"Hello?"
"Hi. This is Dianne Simmons with McPherson Police Department. I was hoping to talk to Hadlee Garcia."
"This is Hadlee."
"Hi. A few days ago, a young man came in to the station with belief that Trinity Springs Mental Institution was corrupted. Do you know anything about this?"
"Yes. River explained it to me. He never informed me that he was going to the police though." Hadlee glanced at me.
"Kids." She chuckled. "Anyways, I called to tell you that River was right. We sent two undercover officers in. We are sending backup now. We are going to evacuate all of the patients to Lindsborg Community Hospital. Would you be willing to bring River down? I want him to be there when we bring them in."
"Of course. I'll bring him right over."
"Thank you, Ms.Garcia. Have a nice day."The call ended. I looked at Hadlee with a big cheesy grin. "Yes. Yes. Yes! We did it! She's going to be alright!" I yelled while jumping around my room. "Let's go!"
The car ride to the hospital was silent. Mostly me being anxious about what my parents are going to say. We pulled up to the hospital and I saw Dianne from the station. I got out of the car and approached her.
"River, it's nice to see you again." She gave me a warm smile. I smiled back.
"So how did it happen?"
"I sent the officers in. We wired them so we could hear everything that happened. Immediately, a man said that if they don't behave there will be consequences. My people are trained for this stuff so naturally they decided to cause a scene. I listened to Officer Hopkins being beaten. The line stayed quiet for a little while then I heard her talk to Rilynn. That's when I called you and Hadlee." She explained to me.
"Thank you so much for believing me. I knew it was a long shot coming to you but I didn't know what else to do. I just didn't want them to hurt her. She's my best friend." I looked down at the ground. I felt a hand touch my arm.
"It's okay. She's alright. They should be here any minute." She turned to walk away.
"Wait." She turned back to me. "There was a boy there. Colby. He was very close with my sister. Is he okay?"
"I'm not sure." She shook her head and walked off.
We waited for a couple hours. Hadlee sat on a bench. Just waiting. A big black truck pulled into the parking lot. The side of the truck read, McPherson County Police Department. Finally.
