"Who are you?"
"No need to know my name, you'll forget it either way.""Father, what are you doing?"
"Quiet! This is what happens when you're not careful enough with what you get yourself into!""Leave her alone!"
"Take this!"
"What? No! Stop, I...""What have you done to her? Love, can you hear me?"
"Step away from her. You're next."
"I beg of you, don't do this.""This is what happens when you walk too close to the edge. You fall off."
"Caroline, are you really sure about all this?"
I looked up at one of my best friends, who was standing right in front of me. I'd been lost in a trail of thought while putting my bags into my mother's car. My favorite clothes were packed up and stored away safely with bath supplies, some money and my passport.
I tilted my head a bit, then gave my friend, Bonnie, a smile."I am," I answered in a secure tone, "I've had enough time to think this through. There is no way I'm turning back now."
She nodded in an understanding manner. Of course, she got it. I had been talking to my friends about this huge change for a while now, they knew best why I was doing all this despite the high effort involved.
"We just want to make sure," my other bestie added. The two girls looked at the filled-up trunk. "It's just still so unreal that you're moving away from here."
I would definitely miss them the most. I had been friends with them since what seemed like forever and it would be tough not seeing them every day.
Bonnie, a beautiful colored girl with cheeky green eyes and short, dark brown, perhaps even blackish hair, had always been the friend closer to my heart.
Nevertheless, Elena, the third party in our squad, was just as dear to me. Elena was white skinned with very soft, loving features and brown, long hair.
We were a funny bunch, us three. I was the blonde, with wavy locks and blue eyes. And I was also the one leaving our hometown Mystic Falls and thus, our squad behind.
"It's just for a little while," I calmed my best friends. "Besides, you can always come visit and vice versa. And we can call or chat every single day."
"I know but we're really gonna miss you!" Elena sighed. With a laugh, I pulled them into a group hug.
It hadn't been easy to make the decision to just go away but I had talked it over with my mother several times and we were both convinced it was the best thing to do momentarily.
My father had left us some time ago and Mom had buried herself in work ever since. I knew she loved me; this was just her way of coping with the situation. We got along either way, and she tried her best to be here for me.
It hadn't always been like this though. Not too long ago, I had been detached from my mother and not in the best state of mind, if I was being honest.
You could have called me the "basic bitch of high school", only having eyes for cute boys heading my way.
But thanks to Elena's very, let's say, interesting cousin Katherine, I had almost died. There is nothing that could ever prepare you for a near-death experience, I can tell you that.
However, it completely changed my life and attitude. It opened my eyes to who I really wanted to be and what I wanted to do with my life.
Since then, I had fixed things up with my Mom and gotten even closer to my friends. I had dated a few guys on the side, but it never lasted, and we always mutually decided to break things off.
