The weekend that followed the soccer game, actually my first weekend in the mortal realm, was much like the weeks that followed it would be like as well. I spent every moment that I could with Daniel and his group. They were really awesome and I was growing closer and closer to them by the second.
Chloe I noticed loved to dress up, but never look her best, because and I quote: "If I always look my best when a special occasion comes I won't look special. And besides, I want my future husband to know what he's getting. Like the real deal."
Chloe and Zach were the funniest and the loudest of the group, they argued all the time and the others called them Dumb and Dumber. Their reasoning was obvious when you heard the two argue. Beneath the arguing and jokes, they were both tender people and you could tell they had a special kind of sibling bond. There was never a dull moment to be found with those two in your life.
Rachel was like the mother of the group, she sort of kept every on in line. Tristan was tanned and had dark hair and eyes, he spoke in a different way to the others. He pronounced all of his words differently, he said it was because he was from another place. But it didn't make sense to me; I was from a different place but I didn't pronounce words differently. James was the only one much taller than Rachel, all the other guys were just a bit taller than her. He was muscular and strong from all the sport he did. Brent was also muscular but in a bulkier way than James. He was as flirty as a person could be, in the week I had spent with them he flirted with more girls than I could count, but despite that he was a good and loyal friend. Adam was the genius of the group, he was also the most laid back person there. The signature thing about him was his shaggy hair. All their different personalities was what made them really work."So how about we have a movie and sleepover night?" Adam suggested studying some poor creature with great comcentration as we sat in the park waiting for Emma. We sat in a circle by a bench, Brent lay across the bench lazily on his back. Rachel sat leaning against the bench, Chloe was next to her and me next to Chloe. On my other side was Daniel. Adam lay on his stomach next to Daniel studying the creature they called a bug and Tristan sat broodingly, with his dark sunglasses covering his eyes. Zach and James kicked a ball to each other.
I hadn't had a sleepover with anyone other than Abby. I looked to Daniel who was nodding in agreement, so I followed suit. There was also a chorus of yes's and yeah's that followed the question.
"Where we gonna have it?" Zach asked, with his one hand raised in the air to stop James from kicking the ball while he was not looking. It didn't stop James at all. "Hey!" Zach moaned.
"We could have it at our house, Zach." Chloe suggested. "We have a movie room and everything, and the girls can sleep in my room."
"And the guys?" Tristan furrowed his eyebrows as he asked, his different accent as they called it still wasn't making sense in my mind.
"Wherever else." She replied with a grin, waving her hand in the air dismissively. "So everyone can check with their parents and get their stuff, we can meet up there later?"
"I stopped having to check with my parents when I was 16." Tristan, ever the bad-ass said smirking.
"Then let them know out of respect." Chloe said sternly. "So see you all later?" She asked as she stood up and dusted off her clothing.
We all nodded and hmmed in agreement, getting up to go. I went with Daniel, as I did everywhere. I was like a lost puppy. Before we left the park we went to fetch Emma, she was the reason we were at the park in the first place.
"Do you want to come home with us and meet my parents?" Daniel asked as we scanned the tons of little heads bouncing around to find Emma.
"Sure." I said excitedly. "Isn't that her?" I said pointing to a little girl sprinting towards an open swing. Her long blonde hair soaring behind her. As she got to the swing she turned to sit, we saw her face as she grinned triumphantly and we knew it was definitely Emma, we both giggled at the sight. With the humans it felt so easy to appreciate the little things in life, the little moments or even the little people...
"Are you in a hurry?" Daniel asked.
"No, not at all." I replied.
"Do you mind if we let her play a little while longer before we go? I know how she loves the swings."
"Sure." I said. I'd have to be a monster to say no to that I didn't have anything else to do any way and I loved spending time with Daniel. We went and sat down on a bench where we could still see Emma. She was such a special child, she was kind and gentle. But at the same time she was this little sassy person. She came up with the strangest things sometimes. She told me she was deaf and when I asked her what that meant, she stared at me deadpan and said it means that you can't hear boys. I asked her if Daniel counted as a boy, she said no. He was just a brother.
We sat in silence for a while just watching Emma and the other children play happily, some not so happily. I was the one to break the silence though.
"What are your parents like, Daniel?" I asked curiously. Seeing as I was going to meet them that very day, I wanted to know a bit more about them... like what their names were at least.
"Uh," He scrunched up his nose in thought. Looking very cute as he did so. "My mom is a stay at home mom, she's cheeky and funny, she's artistic and a peoples person. She's always honest and does everything she can for us, she has the biggest heart ever. My father is stern and protective, he works as a psychologist for a living. He has the weirdest sense of humor and most people don't know when he's joking. He cares in his own way." He smiled fondly as he spoke of them. I gathered that they must have been a close family. And it made me feel warm inside, then it made me feel sad. I was close to Puck as well, he was my only family and I had left him with just a note. He would have never have let me come otherwise... that didn't justify or make my choices the right choices though. I hoped my brother was okay and not worried sick. I had to remember to ask Hunter if he had contact with my brother or Harrison. If anyone could it would be one of them.
"They sound like amazing people." I said, giving a small smile. A small sad smile that is.
"What are your parents like?" Daniel asked obliviously. Ah, I did not think that far. Obviously he would ask as well, how was he supposed to know?
"My parents," I said quietly, swallowing the lump that had suddenly closed up my throat. "My parents died a few moths after I was born. I don't remember them at all, what I do know is that my brother and I look exactly like my mom in most ways."
"I'm so sorry." He said, his voice conveying the sympathy he felt for me. It surprised me that he didn't ask about my brother, but maybe he sensed that I was feeling sensitive.
I took a deep breath before I spoke. "Don't worry." I smiled. "I guess in a way that was the best time if there was any, rather not grow up with them and know them better. It would have been harder, if that makes sense?"
"Yeah." He nodded as he said this, looking thoughtful. "Lets get going." He jumped up and pulled me with him, then stared skipping in front of me. Making me laugh loudly and glow like a firefly with elation.
I felt as young as a child again, what the old couple meant made more and more sense. It wasn't about the age of your body, some fae lived hundreds of years in a young body but were old souls and acted as such. Where as being young at heart was what was more important than your body being young forever. It was what was inside that mattered.
