I'd chosen to stay, murmuring it while feeling an inch tall. Fenwick looked at me with a haughtiness, I frowned and watched as Nisha walked down the long corridor.

"Smooth move."

Surprisingly, Nisha turned to the door to the lookout.

"Yeah, I know. How do I fix it?"

"By doing what you're told, don't back answer her, don't be a smart ass that thinks he knows everything and maybe stop hitting on her."

I could do all but one of those things because I got the feeling that Nisha was just playing hardball. I didn't want to be pushy or overstep some boundary but I had to know if she was interested or if she wasn't. Maybe if I was just honest, I could get a response from her that wasn't mocking or teasing.

"How did you know that?"

Fenwick huffed, rolling his eyes.

"I know everything that goes on in this place, she told me and I've seen a lot since you arrived. Your ten minutes are dwindling, better get up those stairs or I'll have to dock your pay."

"Who do I report to?"

Smugly he smiled, moving back to his desk.

"Well, that would be your CO."

I was so royally screwed. Restraining the frustrated huff, I turned and walked to the door. Climbing the stairs, I felt the temperature drop further. Tonight was colder than last night, I wasn't looking forward to spending hours up here. I could now see that this was a punishment of the worst form.

Reaching the top of the stairs, I surveyed the corridor and found Nisha to the left of me. There was no other choice, not that I would actually stop to consider it. I had to fix this. Coming here, being punished, it was definitely a wakeup call.

Nisha was at the wall opening, looking out at the wilderness. The binoculars were in her hands but she wasn't using them.

"Can I interrupt?"

"Only if it's important." She said without turning to me.

"Okay, well, to me it is. Does that count?"

"Not really but I get the feeling that you're not going to leave until you speak your mind so knock yourself out."

Great. She hates me. I huffed, Nisha glanced at me momentarily before returning to the view.

"I know that I've done wrong in the past and I'm probably going to pay for it for a really long time but I'd like the chance to start over. Being sent here was a punishment but I'd like to think of it as a life changing opportunity."

"You don't like women ordering you around." She muttered.

"That's the way that it was perceived but it's not the truth. I didn't like the person that was my CO who happened to be a woman."

"Your file said that you made a pass at her, clearly you did like her."

I huffed derisively, not surprised that it was written up that way.

"I did not like her and I certainly did not make a pass at her. She shipped me off to the next place within days of her posting, I'd been there for several months under a different CO who was a woman."

Nisha looked at me curiously, I shrugged.

"I wasn't the only one that she turfed, the excuses had to be broad to ensure that no one paid attention. She wanted mindless zombies."
