Nisha and I had spent a week documenting the creatures. It was a week of interesting moments. The female creature had returned two nights after and then three nights after. It seemed like she was nomadic or in a situation that she couldn't always get back here. Maybe that alpha was hanging around. Either way, when she did return, she was eager for her free feed. The creature was responsive, mimicking my movements and gestures. The observation light was kept to a routine so that she wouldn't get spooked by changes.
Tonight was my night off and it was unlikely that she'd appear. Last night there was a howl so we suspected that the female would disappear for tonight, maybe tomorrow night as well.
"Captain Beaumont,"
I turned to James, waiting for him to bustle down the corridor.
"I'm sorry to do this to you but I desperately need you to go up to the lookout. We're short staffed."
"Oh, I uh,"
"I know, you're probably planning on kicking back at the o club and relaxing but I've got no one else."
I wanted to say that it was an unofficial date with Nisha and that not turning up would seriously screw up my plans of moving to the next level with her.
"Sure. Is Nisha around?"
"She's in a meeting. Another nightmare," James scoffed. "A visitor arrived unannounced."
"Of course, I'll see her another time."
James nodded brightly and scuttled back to his desk, I turned to the stairs and went down rather than up. That door with the no admittance sign, that was actually Nisha's private quarters.
Gently knocking on the door, I waited. Believing that I could hear someone in the room, I pressed my ear to the door and thought that the voice was male. Standing upright, I knocked harder. Seconds later, Nisha opened the door. It was a portion of her face through the crack of space. When she realized it was me, Nisha slid through the door. Her attempt at hiding the male guest in her room was a complete failure.
"Hey, what's up?"
"What's up?" I asked, perhaps a little too coldly. "You're ditching me for what, another guy?"
"Good grief," Nisha muttered, rolling her eyes.
With a heavy sigh, she leaned on the wall and looked up at me.
"No, Oliver. I have an official guest who is male. He did not tell me that he was going to be here tonight. Otherwise, I would have found you and told you beforehand."
She pulled on the zipper of my jacket, giving me a sly smirk.
"I like that you're jealous, must mean that you care."
Stepping closer, I leaned down and hoped that she wouldn't push me away.
"Tomorrow?"
Nisha nodded and pulled my jacket again. Pressing my lips against hers, I felt the warmth that was slowly fading to the cold air. It was soft and short because I should be up at the lookout, not here kissing the boss.
"Kick him out when I get off duty,"
"You're on the lookout tonight?"
"Fenwick's short of staff."
Nisha rolled her eyes and stepped to the door.
"Two am, a second attempt at tonight."
I nodded, smiling and much happier.
