The cold wind burned against my face as I stared at the other side of the gorge. Occasionally I'd see something move but nothing had ventured out of the vegetation. My eyesight was getting better, I could see shadows and a rough outline.

My mind was distracted, thinking about Nisha and that perfect kiss. She'd reciprocated, much to my delight. No pushing me away, no scolding me or ordering me to back off. An offer was made, one that I found extremely enticing. When I finished my duties for tonight, I could find her in the o club and we'd discuss what would happen beyond that kiss. I was hoping for more, it worried me that rejection would happen instead.

Standing here for hours on end was boring. I'd like something to happen but then I remembered what would happen if a creature appeared. The other guy that was on tonight moved in beside me, watching the land.

"Where did these creatures come from?"

"No one knows. There are a few conspiracy theories going around. My favorite is that they're a lab creation from the humans and their goal is to try and kill us. If an alpha makes the jump, then it's a job done well."

"But they'd get the humans too."

"Yeah, that's why it's just a theory. Evolution from something is probably closer to the truth. It could have been around for hundreds of years, hiding somewhere, unnoticed by the humans. What if an explosion opened a cave full of them? No one knows and unless we learn how to communicate with them, we're never going to know where they came from."

Leaning on the wall, Carford crossed his arms and looked at me rather than the land.

"I reckon they're going to take over province three."

"What makes you think that?" I murmured, frowning as I looked out at the moving plants.

"Why wouldn't they? Control the land along the gorge and you've got firsthand access to those creatures."

"They don't want access to them, they're trying to protect us."

I kept it cool, casually speaking to see how much he knew. Nisha said that the pictures were shown to everyone but how much information was shared?

"They do want access to them, they'd be mad if they didn't. All they need to do is figure out how to communicate, offer them something enticing and the deal is done. Trust me, vampires forming an alliance with them is better than the humans getting to them."

"They consume the same food as us, they'll decimate the human population."

"All the more reason to gain control," Carford muttered. "I'm going to take a leak."

He began to walk to the restroom, I turned and tried not to sound whiney.

"There has to be two out here."

Carford turned, leaning on the door as he pushed it open.

"Us being here is a complete waste of time. A, it's winter so those creatures are going into hibernation. They've fed themselves up with lots of fat and soon if not already, they'll find a nice warm place to sleep the cold months out and b, there are cameras along the roof so, someone is always watching what's going on. If you want someone to hold your hand then, by all means, call Fenwick and have someone sent up for the minute I'll be in here."

He didn't wait for my response, turning into the room. I didn't want this to be my decision, I wasn't the one that had left my posting.

"Jack ass," I muttered.

Returning to the boring view, I huddled tight against the wall. It was a pitiful shield against the howling wind but I had to try something. Movement caught my eye, I perked up and saw the ghost-like face appear in the plants. Lifting the binoculars, I saw that it was a woman. She was a pretty creature, definitely beta. The alphas were freakishly hideous.
