When the replacements arrived, Nisha flicked her head to the door, silently gesturing to follow. I thought that we might end up in her office, looking at pictures of this odd creature. Maybe in the o club for a drink and a conversation. I could even take a private conversation in her room. I'd be a good boy, I'd keep my hands off if it meant that I'd get information.

Instead, we went to the meeting room. It was a bland and large room, filled with seats and a projector.

"Sit down."

Her hand flicked at the front row, I sat down and waited. Nisha turned off the lights and flicked on the projector. The first image was of what was clearly a woman. She was curved and proportioned just like a female vampire or human. A baby was swaddled tightly against her chest.

"This is the first picture that the surveillance managed to get before we set this base up," Nisha said, sitting beside me.

"The women were jumping the gorge in large numbers. We've done reconnaissance work in each of the four provinces that span the gorge, they're jumping wherever they can."

The next picture was of a different woman, there wasn't a child with her.

"This is usually how they jump, pregnant. It's rare to see one jump with the child already born but as you just saw, it does happen. So, these creatures are jumping when pregnant, they find a city and blend in. When it comes time to give birth, they go to a hospital, have the child and leave without taking the child."

"They abandon the child?"

"Yes."

I was a little stunned. What would make a creature do such a thing?

"They figured out where the vampires and humans birth their young and they did it well."

Nisha glanced at me warily, the light of the screen lit up her concerned features.

"We've already come across one adult creature that was born in such a situation. The hospital had no idea, they thought that she was a breeder child and came up with a lame excuse about the father being not interested in the mother and left after the child was born. The mother was supposedly so distraught that she walked out into the night, leaving the baby behind. Based on what we've seen of the woman's abilities, we now know that the story about her parents is just that, a story. We figure that there was no father at the birth and the mother fled after having the child."

"So, they're smart enough to watch us, figure out how we do things and use it for their own benefit?"

Nisha nodded.

"Why are they dumping their babies here?"

The next image was flicked over, Nisha turned and looked at me. I stared, horrified beyond belief. The land was coated in blood, entrails hung from the trees and what was possibly a creature was on the ground split open and in pieces. Hunched by the body was an alpha, feeding on it.

"That is what awaits us if they make it over the gorge. That is what the females are trying to get away from."

"So, let them."

Nisha huffed, shifting on her seat so that she faced me.

"Where do you think the alpha males come from, Oliver? They don't just magically appear, they're born, just like the females. We let one over, we risk an alpha entering society. We're struggling enough as it is, we don't need to make it worse."

"So, is that the plan? Keep them over there and us over here?"

"Until we can figure out the alphas from the betas, yes."
