I didn't like being rostered on with Carford but couldn't say anything because I'd chosen not to be a snitch. Nisha stated quite clearly that until I made a formal complaint, she couldn't reprimand him officially and she couldn't alter the rosters. James was the one that organized them and if she tried to change it then he'd start asking questions. She wanted me to say something but I said it was fine. He was only gone for a few minutes and it's not as if anything detrimental happened.

In fact, it led to a moment with Nisha and me. Another step closer, another crack in that wall she had around herself. We were playing it cool, little interludes but nothing serious. It was on the horizon, I was working on it. I had a green light so I wasn't going to hold back but, I wasn't going to push her.

Turning away from the bathroom door, I rolled my eyes. He seemed to spend his life on the toilet and I had a sneaking suspicion he was only going in there to keep warm. Lifting the binoculars up, I scanned the shrubs and was a little taken aback when I saw the female creature again. She smiled at me, raising her hand. I did the same, much to her delight.

Curious as to how well we could converse at a distance, I held my fingers to my mouth and then rubbed my belly in a big circle. Her head tilted, still watching me. She couldn't understand me, I turned to the fridge and pulled out a piece of meat. After wriggling it in the air so she could see it, I then put it on the ledge and mimicked eating and rubbing my belly again.

The creature smiled and raised her fingers to her mouth, almost nodding at me.

"Amazing," I muttered. "Well, because you asked so nicely."

Putting the meat into the catapult, I shot it out into the air. She jumped, caught it and avoided the light that swung to find her. The creature was already in the shrub, the light missed her completely. When it was gone, she appeared again. I waved goodbye, not so surprisingly, the creature copied me. Lowering the binoculars, I watched as the face disappeared into the vegetation.

"Having fun?"

I gasped, jumping as I turned to see Nisha behind me. She looked out at the other side of the gorge, turning back with a smug smile.

"I guess now that you've got yourself a girlfriend you're off the market."

Then she turned and walked to the bathroom door.

"It's so not like that."

Nisha huffed a mocking laugh. Then she banged on the door.

"Carford, get your ass wiped and get out here." She barked hard and loud.

Seconds later, he sheepishly emerged.

"It's fine, Nisha. I was okay on my own."

She glared at me, wordlessly telling me to shut up.

"You are to report to Fenwick immediately."

Wordlessly Carford nodded, walking through the door that Nisha held open for him. She closed the door and turned the hard glare to me.

"I told you to tell me when he abandoned his post."

"Not a snitch."

"You are defying a direct order. Do you want me to make a notation on your file? Considering your history and my gender, it won't look good for you."

"Nish," I purred, moving closer.

"Stop."

Her hand went up, looking like she wanted to touch my chest but restraining herself.
