The explosion was loud, big, and hot. It hit at 10pm on the dot, Peter's apartment building and a few of the surrounding ones were soon to be gone, nothing but rubble and dust. Most or all the people in those buildings were inside when they exploded, it was 10pm after all, well, everyone except Peter. He was out on patrol because his spidey-sense wouldn't let him sleep.

He figured it was telling him something bad was going to happen in the city. Something bad did happen in the city, but not where he thought. Peter was two blocks down when he heard the glass shattering boom and saw the bright orange glow. He knew theses streets too well to have any faint idea that it wasn't his building, he knew his aunt too well to even consider that she wasn't sleeping. Yet he still thought that maybe, just maybe she was ok.

Peter was violently flinging himself through the streets and running across rooftops, he had to get there. He had to see May. Hopefully she was out on a walk, or maybe she was at the store, or even working a really late night.

That last lie stung the most, he knew she was home because she had checked on him just before he left, she had come into his room to say goodnight and that she loves him, Peter had pretended to be asleep so she wouldn't be suspicious of why he was still up. He should've said it back, he should've stayed in bed. He knew something was going to happen and he left.

Peter landed in the street in front of the still burning building that was now half gone. Firetrucks Were spraying as much water as they could, the fire stood strong. Peter started to help. He was spraying large nets of web to put out fires and with the firefighters' help, the fire was out in ten minutes.

The second his building was clear, Peter landed in the middle of where only fragments and unstable metal building outlines stood. The ground was still very hot but Peter couldn't care less about his feet right now.

There were burnt bodies and charred limbs scattered everywhere. Peter moved a little faster, as did his heart, he was searching for any kind of sign that May wasn't in the building, that she was alive and safe. There was ash and dust blowing through the light breeze, it felt too calm for what had just happened. It was too quiet, too dark, too-

He saw it.

An arm poking out from under a large chunk of what must have been the cement that separated the floor levels. The arm was burnt and mangled. Peter knew it was May by the few remaining red acrylic nails and the silver and diamond wedding ring she still wore, they didn't make that design anymore, hers was the last. Near her hand was the remains of Peter's bed sheets.

Suddenly Peter could hear everything, like his ears popped with realization. There was screaming and crying in the streets. Officers yelling for people to stay back and stay calm. The spray of fire hoses against the crackle of flame from surrounding buildings. Someone was yelling "Spider-Man! Get outta there, it's not safe yet!". He didn't care.

Peter slowly took the ring from May's crisp finger, tears fell behind the eyes of his mask. The small object felt way heavier than it actually was. Once he had it, he swung away from his used-to-be home. He didn't know where he was going he just knew he was getting away.

Eventually Peter crashed onto the roof of his school. He rolled onto his back and pulled his mask off, his face was wet and he knew he looked awful. He held May's ring above his face, the arm holding it was too heavy. He rubbed his thumb over the the three diamonds on it, two smaller ones with a bigger one set neately between them, and let his arm fall. His tears flowed heavier now. Now that he could think.

He left May. She died holding his sheets. She died alone and scared. She went to Peter's room. She went to comfort him or get comfort only to find he was gone. He left her alone. If he was there he could've saved her. If he wasn't so dumb as to not recognize what his Spidey-sense was telling him. Peter let his last relative die. The Parker blood line ends here because Peter was going to die alone. Just like May.
