We stared at each other for a second before two other faces appeared behind Jess.
"Hannah," Cupid said with a small smirk before noticing the way I gaped at Jess, "Oh..."
He turned sideways towards move between Jess and the doorway so that he could greet his mother. Alex was close behind but didn't bother to greet me, instead following Cupid to her mother."What are you doing here?" She asks quickly.
"What are you doing here!?" I counter.
"I asked first!"
I glance back to see that two more chairs had appeared. Alex and Cupid sat close to their mother and conversed quietly.
"I'm not sure," I answer, "I think they've kidnapped me."
"Oh..." she says and looks away guiltily. I had known Jess for a long time so I knew when she was hiding something.
"What's going on? Why did you call her 'mother'?"
She looked even more guilty than before but didn't get a chance to answer. Or rather someone else answered for her.
"Jessica dear, come sit with your siblings and tell me what happened," Aphrodite says in a sweet, but commanding voice. Jess brushes past me & sits as a chair appears beneath her.
"You too Hannah," she says and motions towards the chair that had appeared for me earlier. I sat down and looked at the group cautiously. Cupid sat to my left and on his left was Alex and Jess. Seeing them sit together was odd, they looked almost like twins. Jess looked at her lap, Alex looked bored, and Cupid... well Cupid was looking at me. I shot him a glare before looking away. He had been keeping secrets from me and then he kidnapped me.
"Now I want to hear what happened Jessica," Aphrodite commanded. I was almost funny watching someone who seemed to usually be quite fun and carefree be so serious.
I looked up again and turned my attention towards Jess. She was still looked at her hands nervously.
"There was something watching Hannah," she mumbled out. I perked up at the mention of my name.
"Speak up and look at me," her mother ordered sharply. Jess immediately straightened up and met her mothers eye, but still shifted nervously in her seat.
"There was something watching us on Friday night," she spoke more clearly, "I knew as soon as we stepped into the parking lot when we left."
I watched them all look at Cupid expectantly, but he had a confused look on his face. What was she talking about?
"Cupid didn't notice because he was focused on keeping Hannah calm," she explained quickly.
"I don't see what this has to do with you being captured?" Aphrodite probed.
"I got a text the next morning from an unknown number. It was coordinates for a park near town. So I went to check it out."
"And you were captured," her mother sighed, I could tell she was disappointed, but also relieved, "By children of that ass Aries no less."
Jess blushed and looked back down at her lap before continuing, "I thought that if I found who it was before they acted you would be proud of me..."
"Proud of what exactly?" She asked, "that you risked yours and Hannah's life?" It was awkward watching Jess get chewed out by her mom, but it was concerned my safety apparently.
"What does this have to do with my safety?" I ask, "I mean, surely these Aries kids don't want to hurt me?"
"No, thank god," Jess answered, "They're idiots, just wanted to know what was going on."
"So everything turned out fine," I sigh, "I'm safe?"
"No, you'll never be completely safe until you can control your powers," she says.
"Jess," Cupid says before I can ask another question, "She doesn't know everything yet."
"Yes, and we don't want to overwhelm her," Aphrodite says and gets up, "The less she knows for now, the safer she'll be." The other three stand with their mother, so I do as well. I shoot up from my seat and cross my arms.
"No way!" I argue, "You can't just take me away from my life and then not tell me why! I want to know who's chasing me and I want to know what it has to with my father and stupid gods and goddesses!"
Jess, Alex, and Cupid's eyes were wide as saucers.
"Hannah," Cupid says slowly, "You need to calm down."
He was looking straight into my eyes, but across my shoulder I could see Jess and Alex staring at my hands. I glance down and shriek when I see blue electrical sparks dancing at my finger tips. It was like tiny lightning. Dread washed over me. I rub my hands against my clothes in an attempt to wipe them off, but they only grew with my panic.
"Hannah, Hannah," Cupid says , trying to get my attention, but it wasn't working and I could feel the sting of tears in my eyes, "Relax, they'll go away if you relax."
"No!" I say and hold up my hands, he cringed away, "My hands! They're..." I looked down at them and watched the lightning spark between my fingers. I quickly realized that it didn't hurt, but rather just felt little like when my foot falls asleep, all fuzzy but no pain.
I looked back up at them and pulled my hands away. I could tell that Jess and Alex were scared, but they didn't dare move.
"Hannah," Cupid says, taking a bold step forward, "Look at me, not them."
I did as he said and looked mer his gaze. Immediately I felt the calm wash over me. He told me to breath slowly. I took a could shaky breaths and felt my heart start to calm slowly. It only took a minute of nothing but breathing for my hands to stop cracking. I could see them all visibly relax.
"Well, that was... interesting," Aphrodite broke the silence.
