The moon started to rise on the opera house. Everyone was asleep in the opera house, all except for the opera ghost and I. I quietly crawled out of bed and out to the halls of the opera house, the moonlight guiding me towards the chapel. Yes I have been helping the girls out with the ballet piece, but a few days ago, they managed to nail the entire ballet with one try, and I told them to teach the other ballet dancers the piece, and so they did, and I have heard compliments from Madame Giry and Erik of course. But I made it to the chapel, and pressed the loose piece on the wall, and walked into the passage. I used the map in my head to navigate and avoid traps. But eventually, I made it to Erik's home.
I watched him as he was playing a piece on the organ. Once I got over to the organ, I started playing the melody in a higher octave, and Erik turned to me.
"How many times do you come and see me?" He asks, half playful half serious. I just shrug it off, but I knew he knew what it meant.
"Raina you need to sleep, you can't stay up every single night," Erik said getting up to bring me back, but I didn't get up.
"You need the company, and besides I'm fine, I'm not that tired," but after I said that, I yawned, out of all the times. I sighed and got up, but fell down from what I assumed was exhaustion. But Erik picked me up and brought me to the Louis-Phillipe room, and set me down on the swan bed inside, but before he closed the curtain, I was fast asleep.
____________________________In Raina's Dream/Memories___________________________
I woke up in my room in England, but there wasn't any furniture, or familiar. But I did hear something, a woman screaming, what if she was in trouble? I ran out of the room to find two girls chasing each other, one taller than the other, than I realized who they were, Mia and Mae when they were kids. But the screaming continued, so I ran towards the noise, sticking to the shadows most of the way. Then I entered the room and realized what this was, this was the night I was born. I was stuck in the womb for 12 hours, no wonder she was screaming. But judging the excitement of the midwife, I was almost out. But after the loudest scream, I heard something I would never think I would here, my first cry, actually, I would call it a whimper. The midwife took me to get clean and I snuck towards us in the shadows. I could see the deformity although slightly pink at the time was still rough to the touch. I reached out my head and stroked my deformity. But eventually, the cleaning was done, and I was handed back to mother. I could see the disappointment in my mother's eyes, but I could the love of a mother there as well, it was hard to see that she would cause so much to me. But I knew the reason that she hurt me, speak of the devil. My father walked in and towards the bed where my mother laid. And I could see the repulsed look at me he had. But I actually think I remember this bit, he tried to kill me right on the spot. But before I could stop him, I felt something pull me back, and I blacked out.
When I woke up next, but this time I woke when my bedroom was first made a bedroom, with my old self asleep in a makeshift bed in the corner, it looks like I'm about 5 years old, wait. This is the day that... no. Younger me woke up and got dressed and looked in the mirror, of course, they used a bandage to cover my deformity, and I didn't even no that my deformity was there. She walked out of the room and into the dining room, but wait this is way different than the dining table in England, of course, I'm in Paris, and this my aunt and uncle's house, on my mother's side obviously. This was confirmed when three boys, each either black of oak brown hair, Yep my cousins, Zar, Balder, and Brendan Followed soon after, by my Aunt Louise, who was always the kindest to me, except for Zar and Mae, and my Uncle Gabe who was like me, in the respect that he shares the same scar on his face. Young me ran over to him, and he scooped me up into his arms. I often remember walking into his room for advice late at night, or writing letters to him, when I was in England. He was the one I loved most because he understood what I went through. But when breakfast was done, Zar, Balder, Brendan, and I were playing a game of tag and doing so we, and by we I mean myself, ran into father, and when I say ran into, I mean ran into. He growled at me, sometimes I think he growls so much, that he's part dog. He dragged me off towards one of the closets and started yelling at me, then mother came along and started yelling at her, telling her that she should have let him kill me the night of my birth. Soon he left, but not before dragging me towards a mirror, and ripping the bandage away, and leaving me there. Mother went after him trying to make him stay. But I looked at myself, curled on the floor, crying that I didn't know what I was, and scared of what I was. But I heard the footsteps of Uncle Gabe walking towards me he picked me up and held me close to his chest, comforting me through this hard time. And when I tried to walk over to them, that same force was pulling me back, and I was out, again.
This time I woke up back in England, but this is when this has more of a bedroom than it was in the years up to that point, I looked at myself, brushing my hair in the mirror, I look about in my early teens, like 13- wait. This isn't it can't be, just no, not this, anything but this. I heard the bell for the door, I got up and ran for it since I was to get the mail since I was probably expecting a letter from uncle Gabe. But when she got to the door, Mother was already there. When she closed the door I could see the grim look on her face, she handed me a letter, I looked in confusion. But, when I found my old self later, she was laying on her bed, sobbing her eyes out, she just found out that Zar died, Raina was ushered for dinner a few minutes later, but I noticed something in the envelope, as soon as I grab it, the force sends me to other memories, came and dragged me away. And of course, knocked me out.
___________________________________End of Dream_________________________________
I woke up with a start as I finally realized that I was in the Louis-Phillipe room in Erik's room, and speaking of which. Once he realized I was awake, he walked over and embraced me so hard, I didn't know if I was breathing.
"Raina I was so worried, you were whimpering in your sleep, and you were crying, I didn't know what to do, what even happened? Oh, Raina..." I patted him on the back, showing that I needed air, he let me go a little but still held on to me.
"What happened? What could scare you like this?" he asked, concern in his eyes. I didn't even realize I was shaking or crying. I shrugged my shoulders
"Was it another one of your nightmares?" he asked, I shook my head, signaling that I was something else.
"It wasn't a dream," I whispered, I looked up at him.
"They were memories," I started shaking more. Erik held my hand, stroking the back of my palm.
"Do you mind-?" he trailed off, I knew what he meant, I just didn't know how to tell it.
"All right," I sighed, he moved closer to me, and stroked me on the shoulder.
"Let's start from the beginning, " I took a shaky breath before starting.
"I was born into one of the noblest families in England, which I'm pretty sure you already know," he nodded.
"Yet I was a disgrace, and the first one to see me like that, was my father," I stopped, and he continued to rub my shoulder.
"My mother couldn't bear to get rid of me, so I had to hide from the rest of the world, but every so often, I would get a taste of freedom," he looked at me in confusion, I knew that someone like us would rarely have any freedom, but I was lucky to get it.
"Every summer, my mother would visit her brother here in Paris, he also has this," I motioned to my face, he still looked confused.
"When I went there, I could just be a kid, not knowing about my scar, until..." he scooted closer to me.
"My cousins and I were playing a game of tag, and I accidentally ran into father, and he decided that this was the last straw," I took another deep breath and continued.
"He left the family, but not after showing me what a monster I was, he left me broken and alone, until..." I again tried to level out my breathing.
" Uncle Gabe came for me, showing that he was there while others weren't, after that, that when I heard something, strange melodies, the melodies that resemble my pain," I smiled.
"When we went back, that's when the abuse started, and the cycle continued for a few more years, until..." I think he knew this part, at least a little bit.
"A letter came to the household, from France, I expected it to be a letter from my uncle, but when I opened it, it was much worse," I felt some tears across my cheek, some being caught in my hair if it was on the right side.
"It was a letter, telling me that Zar died," more tears fell, as Erik came closer, embracing me. I stopped there, knowing that he knew the rest of it.
"I suppose I should tell you mine," he sighed.
"Darling you don't have to if..." he looked at me, I shut up knowing that he would do this anyway.
"I was born in the hidden heart of Paris, my parents weren't exactly rich but they were normal, and when I was born, they tried to hide me, failing to do so, they had a choice, to be outcasts but keep me, or leave me to the streets to fend for myself, and you could guess which they took, I became well known on the streets, no one wanted to mess with me, but when I was 8, I ventured outside of the city, that was where I was found by the gypsies, I stayed for about 5 years, each year as agonizing painful as the next, then as I'm sure you know, Madame Giry and Clara found me and I was brought here, for the next few years I stayed in the cellars of the opera house, using the passages to view what was happening, that was when the rumors of the Opera Ghost started, most of the 'tricks' I pulled in my earlier years were just accidents, but I soon realized how much power I had in my hands, soon I was grown and Madame Giry became my, how should put this... accomplice, and one day, I saw a small girl, brown hair, doe-like eyes, and an amazing and raw talent in singing," I thought about who he was describing, but then it hit me like a train, Christine.
"Every night I would find her lighting a candle for her father, and praying for an Angel of Music, and I wanted to reach out to her, so I became her Angel of Music and taught her how to sing," I felt a slight pang of jealousy for Christine, who was the majority of his focus for most of his days here.
"I have been teaching her for 9 years until the rehearsal of Hannibal, I went to the roof to find out who was to replace La Carlotta, I saw the new Prima Donna and her mother, but what perked my curiosity was a girl, that seemed to be like me, in her sense of mystery and her secrets. So I went and watched the rehearsals, to find that the new Prima Donna was a disgrace and I just had to stop it, so I dropped a backdrop on her," I giggled slightly at that part, remembering my first day at the Opera Populaire.
"After that, the understudy got the role whilst the Prima Donna, got only a sprained ankle from the backdrop, but what I did not realize, was that the understudy was on the roof with me, when she knew I was there, she didn't run in fear, since she knew who I was, but stayed and treated me, like a man," he stopped and looked at me.
"And her name was Raina," he closed the story off with.
"You feel better now?" he asked, I nodded and kissed on the showing cheek.
"And I feel like I have to do something," I looked up at him, he nodded probably knowing what I was going to do. I went back to the dormitories and slept for the rest of the night. The next morning I got up, had some breakfast, and walked out since rehearsal didn't start till 2:00. Which I think Erik has tried to change, seeing as hardly anyone is putting the effort, excepts for some, like me and the girls in the corps de ballet. Anyways, I walked through the streets of Paris and came across a small hut and the corner of the street, facing the road towards the opera house. I smiled and knocked on the door. And Aunt Louise answered:
"R-Raina?" she asked in shock.
"Hello Aunt Louise," she came out of the house and gave me a hug so tight, I couldn't breath. She invited me inside after that, apparently catching her at the best of times when nothing was happening.
"So how long will you be here for?" she asked in excitement.
"I'll be here until the end of the season, so for a while, and I have been here a while, so sorry I forgot to say hi," I said sheepishly.
"Oh not a problem dear, I assume that is why they were so excited on the performance of Hannibal, to find you on stage, or was it, Mia or Mae," she said the last part in a bit of disgust, since she knew of my talent, and of me being overshadowed by my sisters.
"Actually, I was the lead in Hannibal, a horrible accident occurred," I explained, saying the last bit with a lot of sarcasm.
"I'll go find your uncle, he's gonna be so excited to see you," I was ready for what I was about to do. I saw Uncle Gabe enter the room with Aunt Louise, and once we made eye contact, I not gonna lie about this, he was crying. We sat down and talked for a bit, about the past 5 years of our lives and about the operas this season. But I knew I had to do this, I had to show them the pond.
"Actually, there's a real reason I came here," they looked at me in confusion as to what I meant.
"Well, it's better to show you, care to take a ride with me?" they shrugged it off and went to their stable at the back of the house and grabbed two horse, Alexandre, a brown speckled stallion, mounted by Aunt Louise. And Estelle, a dark grey mare, mounted by Uncle Gabe. Whilst I mounted Caesar, who Erik let be borrow for this, we rode off towards the forest at the edge of the city, and while my uncle and aunt were confused, decided to trust me. We dismounted at a clearing a few feet away from the pond, and once we got there, I could tell that my uncle and aunt were shocked.
"This is what I wanted to show you," I said after they basked in the places beauty for about a minute.
"This is amazing, but I don't mean to be rude, why is it important? And wh didn't you show us this before?" Uncle Gabe asked as he walked a bit closer to the water.
"I can answer both of those questions with this," I walked up to the willow tree, they followed, first in confusion. But I brushed the part of the bark that marked his grave. And they stood silent for a few minutes, weeping that a grave had been marked here.
"But why did someone do this?" Aunt Louise asked.
"I dug this grave and put him here, because in a note he left in the top pocket of his jacket before he died, it said that his final wish was to be buried here, he knew this place was special, to both me and him, so I just followed orders given by him," I explained to them.
"Was there anything else in the note?" Uncle Gabe asked.
I pulled out of a hole that was in the willow, seemingly unharmed, and I opened it, and at the bottom, it seemed a bit smudged, but I could tell what it says.
"Caecus," I read the final word of Zar before he died, Louise and Gabe were in total confusion, but I started thinking through the possibilities.
"Caecus is Latin meaning blind, but he hadn't met anyone that was blind, did he?" they shook their heads, but then it hit me.
"It's the meaning of a name, written in a dead language, oh my gosh," my breath start growing uneven, at an unerving rate, he didn't, why did he have to ruin everything.
"Who?" Louise asked.
"It's my father, it's Cecil, Cecil is an English name meaning blind, and the word for blind in Latin is caecus, no, no no no no no," I shook my head, whilst having something he said repeating in my head. You caused everything.
"It's ok we can help now, we know who we're dealing with," Uncle Gabe said trying to sooth m.
"No you can't don't you see, everyone that has tried to help is as good as dead, I caused everything," before they could speak another word, I was gone.
