"Baby, what inspires you?" I asked Kalin, as I held his hand and proceeded to walk to the park we always visited when we skipped lunch together. I looked up at him and watched as he thought. "Well I'm not sure. I mean singing is my passion but I'm not sure what inspires it." A smirk spread across my face, "It's obvious, isn't it? I do." He looked down at me and hugged me closer. "Obviously babe. But why do you ask?"
I told him about the project and he nodded his head. "Ohh. Well that sounds hard. What inspires you then?" I looked down at the ground and kicked pebbles as I walked. I had been thinking about that question for hours and hours but still didn't have an answer. "I can't think of anything. I don't even have a passion."
We spotted a swing set and instantly went to sit down. I began swinging my feet, making me swing move slightly. Kalin looked at me, confused. "Wait wait, how don't you have a passion? Everyone has a passion. Dig deep." I let out a puff of air. Why did everyone keep saying that? I didn't know how to dig deep. Emotions weren't really my strong point. "I guess. Hey babe, sing something for me!"
Kalin let out a small laugh, "now?" "No, next week, of course now!" I tease, smiling at him. "Okay okay, give me a song." I looked up at the clouds that looked like cotton balls in the sky and thought. "Hmmm, okay okay sing Young Love by Chris Brown." Kalin smiled and cleared his throat. "Alright, I got you."
Then, staring me in my eyes, he began to sing to me. His voice was so beautiful, I felt like I was mesmerized and under a trance. I reached for his hand and intertwined his fingers with mine as he sung. I couldn't help but think about how lucky I was to have him. I leaned in, ready to kiss him, but then my phone rang. Stopping, I rolled my eyes and looked at the caller ID.
"Who is it?" Questioned Kalin. "Myles." I said as I answered the phone. "Hey Myles." I could hear the kids from school talking in the background. "Lunch is almost over so hurry back. You will not leave me in art alone again. Seriously." I let out a laugh and Kalin's face twisted with curiosity. "Okay okay, I'm coming. I won't leave you alone this time. Good looking out!" This time he laughed before we said our goodbyes and hung up.
I hopped out of the swing and looked up at Kalin, whose face was twisted with disapproval. "What's wrong?" I ask, noticing his expression. "What did he say?" "Oh he said it was time to come back." Kalin stared down at me before saying, "And that's what made you laugh, huh?" Then it wasy turn to twist my face and give him the 'are you kidding me?' look. "What's your problem?"
Kalin grabbed his phone from the ground and began walking towards the school. "Nothing. Not a thing." I stood there for a moment before running to catch up to him. I grabbed his arm and pulled it, causing him to look towards me. Even though his body was facing me he wouldn't look down at me and he was noticeably angry. "Kalin White, look at me." He continued to stared straight ahead so I hit him roughly on the chest. "I asked you to look at me!" I screamed.
Finally he looked down at me and I could see his jaw clenched tightly. "What's wrong Kalin? Please talk to me." I said, gentler that time. Kalin closed his eyes and re-opened them. "Why do you even talk to him?" I twisted my face with confusion.
This could not be about Myles.
"Myles?" I asked, hoping he wasn't the topic. Kalin rolled his eyes. "No the fucking Cookie Monster,of course Myles." Sarcasm leaked off of his words causing me to take a step back. I remember a lot of sarcasm that day. So much sarcasm.
Guess it was about Myles.
"Because he's my project partner? And my friend? Why not?" I question, feeling a little offended and placing one hand on my hip. "Maybe because all he wants to do is steal you." He said, as if I should have known. I held my pointer finger up as emphasis as I said, "First of all I'm not some dumb ass possession, he can't fucking steal me. Got me?" with out letting him answer I continued, this time holding up my index and middle finger. "And second, I chose you. I chose YOU. So get over this childish bullshit and let me love you. Are we understood?"
At that point I didn't know whether I was being mad or being sentimental. Without waiting for a statement from Kalin, I rolled my eyes, walked around him, and tried to head back to school before lunch ended. I could hear him call my name as he tried to catch up but I kept walking until I got to school.
I got there, luckily, just as the lunch bell rang. After grabbing some things from my locker I walked to art class. I saw Myles standing by the door with his friends as usual. I gave him a quick wave as I passed him and headed inside. Almost instantly he followed me into class and sat beside me. "Hey, Mira, what's wrong?" He asked, gently shaking my shoulder. Only then did I realize my face had been twisted anger ever since I left the park.
"Oh uhm nothing, why?" "Maybe because you look like you want to kill someone." He said, chuckling. I let put a deep breath and considered telling Myles what happened. I didn't want Kalin to be mad for me telling him but at the same time Myles was my friend, so why not? I explained to Myles about what happened at the park and he nodded as he listened.
"Oh. Well just so you know I completely respect your relationship and I'm not trying-" I cut him off with a wave of my hand. "Shh, I know that Myles. We're friends, I believe you." A smile spread across his face. "We're friends?" I pushed him gently and rolled my eyes. "Duh." I teased and turned my attention to the teacher. I felt relieved after talking to Myles.
I knew both of us only had good, honest intentions which were finishing our project and just being normal friends. I was completely convinced Kalin was over reacting so I brushed it off. I really liked him but I couldn't deal with his jealousy. It was aggravating. Especially since I wasn't the jealous type myself.
I mentally rolled my eyes and then focused on our current class project which was creating a color wheel. As I was trying to figure out what the hell I was doing, Myles leaned over and whispered in my ear. "You found your inspiration yet?" I shook my head 'no' and let out a sigh. "It's so hard!" Myles face formed a sly grin as if he knew something I didn't. "What's that face?" I questioned, curious. He grinned even wider. "I have a plan. I'm gonna take you somewhere after school today."
"Take me where?" I asked, really interested at that point. Also really excited. "Surprise." He whispered and leaned back in front of his unfinished color wheel and began painting. I smiled to myself because I loved surprises. Plus I hoped his plan would work and help me find some inspiration. The project was due soon and Myles was mostly done with his sketch. I tapped my pencil impatiently, waiting for the bell to ring.
