"Enjoy the show, miss" the ticket seller in the small booth located at the entrance to the theatre said as he slid your ticket under the glass. You thanked him, zipping your purse shut and walking into the building. You passed through a glass revolving door and stepped onto the deep red carpet. Your feet sunk slightly as you walked towards the counter which snacks were served from. You could smell the fresh popcorn as soon as you had entered, and even though you weren't planning to get snacks this time, the aroma had persuaded you. You approached the counter and asked for a popcorn with your favourite soda, paid and made your way towards the screen. The double doors on the right side were propped open for people to walk straight into, golden poles with a red velvet rope through them creating a guidance or a barrier to the door.
The screen was empty apart from one worker situated at the bottom of the stairs, probably due to this viewing being the last of the day on a weekday. You took a seat mid way between the centre and the back of the theatre, closer to the left wall when you were facing the screen. As you sat, you carefully placed your drink in the holder beside you and your popcorn on your legs as you took your phone out to check the time. As you did so, the lights began to dim and you turned it off straight away. The doors you had walked through banged shut. It was weird that you were alone in such a large room, and almost unnerving. But, looking on the bright side, at least you wouldn't have anyone annoyingly chewing popcorn loudly or swishing their slushy around with their straw in an attempt to make it melt enough to be drank.
You heard a ticking as the projector began to power up as the lights finally turned off completely, leaving you in darkness. One beam shone down the centre of the room and lit up the screen, although nothing was playing yet. You waited, not worrying while you ate your popcorn. But then you heard voices coming from the projector, as it turned off and you were left in pitch blackness. You set your popcorn down on the floor and reached for your phone in your pocket, at least if you could turn it on and get the torch on you would be able to see where you were going.
The voices stopped suddenly, as did your movements. Your hand was on the cold metal of your phone inside your pocket, and you found yourself staring at the direction of the projector even though it was so dark you couldn't see your own hand in front of your face.
"Hello?" you shouted.
Why did I do that? Am I trying to get murdered? Honestly, how many horror movies have you seen where that ever works out for the person who does it? Idiot - you mentally scolded yourself. You shook your head as you pulled your phone out of your pocket, but just as you did so, a bang made you jump and the phone clattered to the ground. It definitely fell down a row, or maybe two judging by the noise. You would've been annoyed at yourself and worried about the condition of the screen if you weren't almost positive you could hear footsteps coming in now. You realised the bang was the door being swung open. The footsteps were slow and muffled against the carpet as the clothing swished in the darkness. You got off your chair slowly, and made your way to the floor making as little noise as possible as you crawled towards the wall staying as low as you could.
Your mind was racing. What were you going to do? What was happening? Should you shout for help?
No, maybe the person will hear me.
But what if they work here?
Wouldn't they have turned the lights on?
You heard voices again coming from the projector room and a warm yellow light switched on, now emitting a glow onto the room you were in. There were more voices now, and what sounded like smooth classical music being played on very low volume.
