"Who's getting married on the Gold Coast?" Brian spoke up from behind me making me jump. "Is it us?" he asked Steph hopefully.
I turned to look at him and gave him a half smile of greeting as Steph shrugged her shoulders and said, "I hadn't thought about it. We can if you want to."
Brian clapped his hands enthusiastically, "I sure do! March sounds good to me. That's a good time of year right?"
"No," I hissed, "March is not a good time!" I rested my hand significantly on my mid-section.
Brian blinked at me in confusion until realisation dawned on his face. "Oh. Shit. Sorry," he said with a grimace. "I didn't think."
"You doin' okay?" he asked tipping his forehead in the direction of my belly.
"Better than I was," I said taking another slug of pomegranate juice. The Spawn had clearly signified his approval because now I couldn't get enough of the stuff. I was going to need to pee every five minutes and the girls were going to think I as an alcoholic at the rate I was knocking it back but it was a small price to pay for the way the delicious tart, sweetness burst across my tongue.
I caught a glimpse of movement out the corner of my eye and turned to see Michelle. "Don't mind me," she said, "I've just come to grab another bottle of bubbles." She opened the fridge and examined the options for a moment before selecting a bottle.
"Brian," she gave her ex-husband a nod, "I didn't realise you were here."
"I'm just working on some stuff with Matt," he said stiffly, "but what are you doing here?"
Michelle raised an eyebrow at that. "I'm helping my friends plan their engagement party," she said easily. God they were civilised. Or maybe that was just Michelle. I didn't know many other women who'd willingly assist in the planning of a joint engagement party for not only their ex-husband but also for their twin's widower. Even if that assistance was limited to drinking champagne whilst agreeing with every suggestion made by the two brides-to-be.
"You could have told me," Brian grumbled and I'm not sure if he was talking to Michelle or to Steph but it was Michelle who answered.
"Brian I didn't clear my every movement with you when we were married, why the hell would I do it now that we're divorced?"
"Fair enough," Brian laughed. "Hey, if you're here that means..." Brian's head snapped in the direction of the family room as a thought occurred to him.
"He's busy playing with his cousins and securing his spot in Harper's affections," Michelle held up a hand as if to stop Brian from immediately decamping to the family room.
A wide eyed look of panic crossed Brian's face. "Harper? You left him in a room with Harper?"
Steph gave a giggle of unholy mirth and Michelle rolled her eyes. "Jesus Brian relax, she's just a little girl. Don't go in there and ruin all of his fun."
Brian shot another nervous glance in the direction of the family room and muttered, "Right, she's just a little girl and Damien Omen was just a little boy."
"Anyway," Michelle waggled the champagne bottle in her hand, "I'd better deliver this before the natives get restless. Plus we're planning an epic road trip to stalk Thor in March when we go to Australia for Matt and Caitie's wedding, I don't want to miss out on any of the details."
"Oh, you're invited are you?" Brian smirked at her departing back. The look she threw him over her shoulder said 'Bitch, please'.
"You really need to come clean," Steph said, "if you let those girls get excited about the prospect of stalking Thor and you deny them they are not going to be happy."
