It was an unbearably hot summer. I spent it helping Betty and others tirelessly go over Archie's case. Veronica was never seen anywhere besides Pops where she worked to make money for herself. Hiram Lodge disappeared into the background as to not raise suspicion, but we all knew what he had done. Jughead was with Archie everyday, like if he left him alone for one second he'd never see him again.
When August's heat fell over Riverdale everyone was losing hope for Archie, but not Betty. Even I, though I hate to admit it, had moments of doubt that we'd find anything to help. Archie begged us to stop working and enjoy his last moments of freedom together. All I wanted to do was have some fun with my friends, but I couldn't leave my work.
"God!" Betty grunted as she banged on the table. The weak fan on the table blew wisps of her blond hair across her face, sweat beads cluttered her red face.
"It's okay, just breath," I comforted and placed my hand on her back. We stood there for a minute as Betty collected her thoughts. Ping! My phones screen lit up and I left Betty's side to grab my phone off the counter.
toni | how's the work going ?
I smiled at my screen. Toni and I managed to keep in touch this summer, despite our completely different schedules. Toni spent most of her time helping the Serpents set up a new camp after the old one was destroyed on riot night, and I was always helping Betty with the case. The times I wasn't working I'd try my best to get a group of friends together to hang out.
me | same old stuff over and over:/ hows camp??
toni | it's fine, wanna do something tonight? we could get a group together!
me | yessss ohmygod id love that sm. lemme tell Betty !
I shut my phone off and returned to Betty. She was still bent over the table, her head in her hands.
"I have an idea, it will help us de-stress and clear our minds!" I tried to say as nonchalantly as I could, but I was practically bursting at the seams at the opportunity to do something other than work.
"Hmm?" She didn't look up.
"We're gonna get a group together tonight, do something fun, maybe see a movie. I don't know, but I bet it'll be fun!" I nudged Betty and giggled.
"I don't know, (y/n)," she replied, still not looking up.
"Well, we've already got Toni, Archie, Veronica, Reggie, Cheryl, and I going, and that's just the start," I read off of my phone the list of people to Betty.
