YOUR POV
Sunlight and summer consumed my senses as Archie's car sped down the open road. I sat in between Veronica and Betty in the car Archie had been fixing up all summer. Songs of love and happiness blasted through the old speakers as we all sang a choir of laughter and joy. The perfect August day was mapped out: swimming in the lake, a campfire with s'mores, and ignorance of the trial tomorrow.
"We're here!" Jughead exclaimed, Archie turned the wheel one last time and there it was.
The lake was a beautiful shimmering shade of blue, the rocks glistened as the afternoon sun gleamed above it. Everyone exchanged observations of how wonderfully gorgeous the scenery looked, except Archie. He stared straight ahead, his golden eyes fixated on the lake like if he were to look away he would never see it again. After our eyes adjusted to the beauty, we got out of the car and began to get ready to swim.
"This is even prettier than how you explained it to me," I said to Archie once we had finished setting up our hang out area.
"It's also even more fun," Archie responded with a light laugh.
Without warning Archie and Jug ran and towards the edge of the small cliff and flipped forward into the water. Betty, V, and I shared a joking look and then grasped hands. We giggled loudly as we ran and jumped into the water, the water was cold and refreshing. As I came out from under the water I felt rejuvenated, and from the look on my friends faces I could tell they felt the same.
The afternoon slipped through our fingers like ice cream down a cone on a hot day. By the time the sun kissed the sky one final time we were all lounging around a gloriously golden camp fire. Archie and V sat across the fire holding hands and Betty, Jug, and I sat on the other side. Everything was peaceful and serene, until the abhorrent conversation came up.
"How are you holding up, Arch?" Jughead initiated the dreaded discussion.
Archie cringed and replied, "No matter what, this was the best last day of summer I could ask for,".
"You're so strong," was all Veronica could say without tearing up. He pulled her closer in response and kissed her on the top of her head.
"You could always try running away. I told you before, my dad and I have it all set up. We have some serpents stationed in Canada, they'll take care of you!" Jughead suggested. From the look on Veronica and Betty's face I could tell this was the first time us girls were hearing about this plan.
"I'm sorry, what?" Veronica questioned, freeing herself from Archie's embrace.
"V, it's just some plan Jug and I talked about last month, but it's obviously not going to happen," Archie sighed and Jughead looked down at the ground with a devastated expression.
