Naomi
As I sat in class, the only thing I could think about was last night. The mischievous look on my mom's face as she prepared to allow Tony to rape me. The look on that man's face as he exploited my body. The blood that dripped down my leg as I tried to scrub away the evidence of that night.
The thoughts of Ray not being there also took a toll on me. So much that I began to feel tears well up in my eyes. If my only brother wasn't there to console me, who would? I raised my hand and asked to go to the restroom, but I grabbed my bag and went to the auditorium instead. I sat in a chair and pulled out my sketch pad, but I couldn't think of anything to draw. As I sat in the chair growing frustrated, I heard someone on the other side of the auditorium.
"Naomi?"
I looked around and spotted Key near the curtain on stage.
"Hey girl" I said as she started walking towards me.
"What you doing? This my first time seeing you here." She sat down next to me.
"Nun, just trying to figure out something to draw. What you doing here?"
"Ain't wanna be in class. I come here all the time. To clear my thoughts. To chill." Key said.
"Which one you doing today?"
"Just chilling. Is everything okay? You seem sad." Key asked. I was staring off blankly into space, thinking about life.
"I'll be fine. Just a lot going on." I said. "I wanna get to know you more." I changed the subject.
" I do too. What you like to do in your free time?"
"Draw or paint. Listen to music. I don't do much. You?"
"Shittt...smoke, drink, party, music. There ain't much I don't do." Key laughed. "I need to get you out somewhere."
I laughed. "I haven't tried drinking or smoking, and I've never been to a party. I'm so introverted I don't really have anyone I talk to."
Key smiled. "Well now you have me."
I smiled back.
"What you doing after school?" Key asked.
"Nothing." I said. I had finished up my part in the mural, so I didn't have anything important for the art program for a couple weeks.
"You wanna come over? I live like 15 minutes away." Key suggested.
"Sure, get me out of the house." I sighed, but Key didn't notice since she had just pulled out her cell phone.
~
"Welcome to mi casa." Key said as she opened the front door to her house.
"Dang girl, how many siblings you got?" I asked as I watched us pass by bedroom after bedroom.
"None. I just have a big family. So, when we have guests over they all have a place stay."
After what seemed like an eternity, we walked into her bedroom.
"And here's my room."
Her room was nicely color coded pink and white with a cute vanity, desktop computer, and her own bathroom.
"Your room is so cute, Key." I said before sitting in the chair next to her vanity.
"Girl if you don't come sit on this bed."
I laughed and joined her on the bed. Key pulled a box out from underneath her bed and pulled out an already rolled blunt. "You wanna try?"
I shook my head. "Nah, I'm straight."
Key shrugged. "Suit yourself." She opened her bedroom window, lit up a candle, then lit up her blunt.
"What made you start smoking?"
"To forget the stress of school, my parents, boyfriend, everything." Key said sighing.
"What's so bad about everything?" I asked curiously. Yeah, I know I'm nosy for a person who doesn't reveal their business.
"School is school. My parents are always arguing. My boyfriend gets on my nerves, always getting at me for partying. Like gosh, let me live my life...I'm still young." She rolls her eyes before putting the blunt to her lips.
I watched her inhale, hold it, then blow smoke out.
"Plus, it makes music sound more amazing." She laughed.
I gave her a confused look. "What you mean?"
"I swear you can hear every instrument playing. It's like you're hearing your favorite song for the first time."
I laughed. "That sounds cool as fuck."
Key laughed.
"So what type of music do you like to listen to?" I asked.
"Anything for real. R&B, Hip Hop, Rap, Pop, maybe Country if I hear the right song." Key laughed.
I laughed. "I listen to a lot of old R&B and Hip Hop."
"Those are some of my favorites honestly." Key looked through her phone.
Key started to play Candy Rain by Soul for Real.
"Ayee, this is my song." I started to sing along to the song. "Myyyy loveee, do you eveerrr dreaammmm of"
Key joined in. "Caannddyy coaatteddd rainnnn dropsss"
After a few songs, Key was finished with her blunt and, I had laid my head back on her bed post.
There was a moment of silence, and I began to think about last night again. I thought about how my brother was M.I.A. My thoughts made me want to try weed...just to get rid of them for a couple hours. But I decided that I needed to sleep on it and not make a risky decision so quickly.
To break the silence, I said: "I've always wanted to have a female friend to do stuff like this."
Key smiled, her eyes were low as shit. "I'm glad I could be here for you."
~
Before I left Key to head home, we exchanged phone numbers. I definitely wanna hang out with her more.
What do you think about Key? How do you think their friendship will proceed?
