Today in school I learned
How to disarm a gunman
There was something so appalling
And disturbing
About this
The fact that children
Are being taught how to fight
An active shooter
While our politicians
Ignore the problem
At the assembly where we learned how to do this
We were told that this is
A "life skill"
Being able to survive through the school day
Is a "life skill"
We were told that
"This is just the way it is"
And that we "have to accept"
That we might to to school one day
But not leave
Essentially
We were told that there is nothing
We can do about this gun problem
And that we should sit
And be complacent
Sit
And die.
We were also told that it is our responsibility
To "stop the shooter"
I would say
That as students
It is our responsibility to learn
To do homework
And to study
I would never in a million years say that
I, as a student
Have an inherent responsibility
To stop a gunman
Lastly,
We were told that being kind
Stops school shootings
We were told that
If we weren't so mean to each other
This wouldn't happen.
So basically,
The students
The victims
Were blamed for the actions of a gunman
To close the assembly
We were told that we are safe in school
However,
That is very contradicting
If we were really safe in school
Why did we have to have this assembly
If we were really safe in school
Then why was I interviewed by the police
Last year due to a shooting threat
If we were really safe in school
Than why did I spend over an hour
Hiding in a closet
