Here They Come

The blazing heat hit him like a truck. He squeezed his eyes shut so that he wouldn't go blind. 'God, I hate the country.' Gabriel thought as he puts on his sunglasses.

Entering this small town was like entering a different world. Gabriel was used to glass towers and screaming people. This place would be paradise for those trying to escape. No wonder Jacob came here.

'Soon, my little Jackal, I will find you. I will have you again in my arms.' Gabriel thought happily.

"Boss?" asked Paulo.

Wiping the sweat from his brow, Gabriel gestures for his men to stay. "Remain here. I can handle this by myself." he assured Paulo and Johnny. "Try not to do anything stupid." he threatened before he shuts the car door.

"Why are we even here? We know where he lives, we don't have to go to his school." spoke up Johnny.

'Oh Johnny, you are not so bright.' Gabriel thought as he turns to face his third in command. "Because, Johnny, if he is here right now, he won't try to cause a scene and will have to come willingly. It'll be easier than shooting up the place." Gabriel said, speaking like he was talking to a toddler. "Now shut up and wait here." Gabriel snapped, and then he heads toward the school building in front of him.

He takes smooth strides as if he owned the place. Running his fingers through his hair and smoothing out his shirt, Gabriel felt at ease. If he was to convince anyone that he was an innocent man looking for a friend, he needed to play it right. As long as they didn't question his visible scars.

When he walks through the doors, Gabriel notices a reception office to his right. 'Let's do this.' Gabriel thought as he pushes open the door.

He shuddered internally when he catches sight of the woman at the desk. She looked normal except for the make up. Who wears that much eyeshadow? Gabriel has seen hookers with less makeup.

Ignoring the disgust he was feeling, Gabriel forces a charming smile to grow on his face. A woman with that much make up wants attention. And attention she'll get.

"Excuse me, ma'am." Gabriel greeted. He lays an elbow on the desk and gives the woman a smile. "Are you the woman I'm supposed to talk to about information?" he asked with a playful wink.

Almost immediately, the receptionist became flustered. She smiled bashfully at Gabriel as she runs her fingers through her hair. Gabriel noticed her pause when she caught sight of the nasty scar on his cheek. He was used to being looked. But it gives him a certain edge.

"What information do you need, Sir?" she asked. The receptionist eyes Gabriel carefully. Clearly, she was trained to notice sketchy characters.

Smoothly, Gabriel produces an authentic police badge from his blazer. The smile drops from his face as puts on an authoritative persona. "Detective Louis Garcia. Does a Jacob Danvers go here?" he asked.

The skeptical look on the receptionist's face was gone, replaced with timid embarrassment. She probably thought he was someone else. It's hilarious seeing those panic when they thought wrong. Even if they originally thought correctly.

"May I ask why?" she asked politely.

"That is a matter between me and Mr. Danvers. Now, is he here?" Gabriel asked. He stuffs the badge into the inner pocket of his blazer. "I need to talk to him urgently."

"Let me get the principal." the receptionist said quickly before she hurries down a hallway that stood on her left. 'This would be easier if I bribed her.' Gabriel thought as he waits patiently. 'Or if I just started roaming the halls.'

It didn't take long for the receptionist to return. Along with an older woman dressed in a pantsuit. This woman was definitely the boss as she just radiated authority.

"I am Principal Summers. May I ask what this is about?" asked the older woman. She quirked an eyebrow at Gabriel in question. Giving her a gentle smile, Gabriel holds out his palm for a handshake. "My name is Detective Louis Garcia. I'm here to talk to Jacob Danvers." he introduced himself again.

The woman doesn't give him a smile as she shakes his hand. "What is this about?" she asked. "I've come from Atlanta because Jacob's father has been pronounced missing by his company partner." Gabriel said, his firmness turning to annoyance. He didn't like chitchatting for long.

"How does this involve Mr. Danvers?" Principal Summers asked skeptical. "That is between him and I." Gabriel replied with a neck twitch. "Now, if you please, could bring him here." he said politely.

The principal frowned at Gabriel in question but doesn't say anything. "Miss Waters, please check and see if Mr. Danvers is here." she asks the receptionist. The woman flinched when she turns and sees the receptionist's face. "And please wipe that obsessive amount of makeup off your face! You are not in a beauty pageant!" she snapped.

Miss Waters squeaked and scurries off to one of the computers. It was difficult not to laugh.

"Should I be worried about this?" asked Summers as she turns back to face Gabriel. "I don't want to find out that one of my students is involved with something criminal." she said. "I'm just here to ask him questions and take him back to Atlanta." Gabriel replied.

Principal Summers doesn't question him anymore. She glances back at the receptionist as the younger woman was making a phone call. "As far as I know, Jacob is a good student. He's had good grades ever since he's been here." she defended.

'So she does have a soft spot?' Gabriel thought.

Finally, Miss Waters ends the call and hurries back to them. "It appears that Mr. Danvers is absent today." she said.

The scar on Gabriel's cheek started to itch. He presses his tongue against the inside of his mouth. The itching turned to a phantom burn that Gabriel experienced whenever something didn't go right.

"Well can I ask where he lives? So that I can stop by his house?" Gabriel asked, rubbing his scar with angry scratches. "Of course." said Principal Summers. She tells Miss Waters to get the address. "Should I call Mr. Danvers and tell him to expect you?" she asked.

At first, Gabriel was going to say no. But he wanted Jacob to feel fear. The boy tore Gabriel's skin, drugged his men, and busted his fighting ring. The boy must feel fear and anxiety as he knows Gabriel is coming for him.

"Go ahead. I don't want to catch him off guard." Gabriel said with a wave. He takes the slip of paper that had Jacob's home address and bids them a goodbye.

Leaving the building, the smile on his face was replaced with a snarling frown. 'Here I come, my little fighter.'
