-Ava's P.O.V-

I was standing in front of my locker with my head rested inside. It was only Thursday morning; the week was going by excruciatingly slow. I couldn't wait for it to be Sunday so I could go to the beach all day, play some volleyball, learn how to surf...

"Ava, are you alright?" I pulled my head out of my locker, seeing Rylee standing to my right, looking at me inquisitively.

"Were you sleeping in your locker?"

"U-uh" I stammered. WHY am I so weird? "No, I was just, um-" I slammed my locker closed, changing the subject "How are you this morning?"

She sighed, leaning her side against the lockers "I've been better" she muttered, "Have you seen the cheer email?"

"Oh shit, I totally forgot to check last night" I gasped, pulling out my phone. I opened my mail app, and there it was at the top. I read through the names of girls who made the team, finding my name at the bottom of the list. I couldn't find...

"Oh no" I sighed, peeking up at Rylee. She nodded "I didn't make it."

I reached put for a hug but bell rang, so she sulked around me, saying "Oh well, it is what it is. I'll see you in Anatomy."

I spent all of Pre-Calc thinking of ways to get Rylee on the team. I knew it was a long shot, but maybe I could get the co-captains to add another girl. After class, Lucas walked me to World History. I told him about the situation, and he suggested I try talking to Daphne about it.

"AVAAAA!" she squealed as I entered World History.

"Hey Daphne, about cheer..."

"Oh yeah! Congratulations on making the team!" she beamed "I can't wait to hang out with you everyday! It's going to be so much fun!"

"Right, so I was wondering-"

"OH MY GOD GUESS WHAT? TODAY WE GET OUR CHEER UNIFORMS! They're soooo cute!"

"That's awesome, but..."

I was cut off when Mr. Reynolds started the lecture. As soon as class ended, Daphne bolted, yelling "I'll see you at lunch!" over her shoulder.

Great. That went well.

When I got to third period, I noticed Rylee slumping over her desk with her head down on the table. Yeesh, she's taking this really hard.

She lifted her head up when I sat down, giving me a small smile "Sorry girl I never said congratulations. I'm really happy for you"

"Thanks Ry. Are you going to be okay?

"I'm just disappointed in myself" she said, biting her lip "Don't worry, i'll get over it. It's probably for the best since I have to work, plus i'm behind on YouTube videos."

Rylee had an advising appointment after third period, so I met up with Lucas at our usual table. As we talked, I kept my eyes peeled for Daphne. I noticed about halfway through lunch that Lucas was snapping in front of my face "Earth to Ava! You alright in there?"
