CHAPTER ONE

Three years later

There were times when being married to a god could be a huge pain in the ass and this was definitely one of those times.

McKenna scowled up at Loki, who straddled her, his knees on either side of her hips, and pinned her hands up above her head. “This is not fair, Loki. Let go of me. Selig will be up at any moment.”

“He’s still sound asleep, love. And I only need a few minutes.”

“Well, I need a little more than that.” She tried to wrench herself free, which was an exercise in futility. He was nearly a foot taller, probably eighty pounds heavier, and he was a god, to boot. “I swear to God, if you don’t let me go, right this minute, I’ll—”

His grin grew infuriating. “What are you going to do, Midgardian?”

“Mommy! See me!”

McKenna had to fight off her grin as Loki rolled his eyes and reluctantly released her, muttering, “We need to talk about your timing, kid.”

He climbed off her and held out a hand to clasp hers and draw her up. He slid his free arm about her waist and muttered, “When we get to Asgard, I’m pawning him off on Eir as soon as possible.”

“Sounds good to me. But for now, I better go see what His Highness wants.”

Loki gave her a squeeze. “I’ll go. You need to finish packing.”

“Why are we going to Asgard, anyway?”

“Because, I have to go with Thor to see what son of Coul wants. And you know I’m not at all comfortable with you and Selig being here alone.”

“Loki, his name is Coulson. And Selig and I would be fine here. I’m not completely helpless, you know.”

“I know.” As he spoke, Loki drew his arm free and moved to the doorway as Selig called for her again. “I just feel better with the two of you being under Odin's watchful eye.”

“You just like the fact that you managed to get him to eat his words and allow you back!” she called as he left the room, smiling as his laughter rumbled her way.

In the three years since their wedding, McKenna estimated they spent half of their time in the realm of Asgard, which wasn’t exactly a chore. Asgard was beautiful, and Odin had definitely warmed toward her. Never mind that he was bonkers over his only grandchild. It was hard to believe now, watching him run about with the toddler, that McKenna was once almost as terrified of him as she was Loki when she’d first met him.

But at the same time, being in Asgard meant being away from Loki, sometimes for months at a time. He’d formed a bit of an uneasy alliance with Agent Phil Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D and often helped them out whenever he was needed. Not only was Loki a master of magic, but he also had the ability to change his appearance at will, which benefitted S.H.I.E.L.D to no end.

It took some getting used to, Loki working with S.H.I.E.L.D instead of them hunting him, but it meant one less thing for her to worry about as well, so she’d take the weirdness.

So with a sigh, she resumed packing the few things she and Selig would need in Asgard. She was just tucking a bottle of baby shampoo into a Ziploc bag when Loki called, “McKenna, come here.”

Oh, that couldn’t be good. She winced as she tucked the plastic bag into the small weekender soft sided suitcase and made her way down the hallway to Selig's room. A year into their marriage, Loki surprised her by having a gorgeous house built in Hunterdon County, which was a far cry from the small apartment they’d been sharing in Brunswick. It wasn’t ridiculously huge, but it was definitely a lot bigger, with five bedrooms, each with its own bath, and it was nestled by massive oaks and maple trees all set on three acres of land.
