CHAPTER FORTY

As they strolled back to the Logan hand in hand, McKenna squeezed Loki's arm against her side and leaned her head against his shoulder. Her spirits were much higher now, even though she'd put up such a fight about going to Asgard, she did miss the kids and was looking forward to seeing them again.

"What's on your mind, love?" Loki asked, pausing his stride long enough to kiss the top of her head. "You're terribly quiet and that usually means you're up to something."

"I'm going to head home tomorrow. And on Thursday I'll go to Asgard." She peered up at him and grinned. "And what do you mean, I'm usually up to something? I'm never up to anything."

"I am but teasing you." He stopped and turned toward her. "But you do look as if something weighs heavily upon your mind. What is it?"

"I just don't like it when I'm there and you're here. I worry."

"I'll be-"

"I know. You'll be fine. But I'm your wife, Loki. I'm allowed to worry."

He smiled, catching her face in his hands. "I know and I know. And I wish you wouldn't because although you get the most adorable little crease right here," he brushed the tip of his forefinger between her eyebrows, "I hate the thought of you not sleeping peacefully."

"Just be careful, okay?"

"I'm always careful, darling girl." He tilted her face back and brushed her lips with a gentle kiss.

"Loki?" Cynthia Coulson's voice broke into the peaceful moment and McKenna bit back a swear word as Loki pulled away.

"Yes?"

"May and I would like to go over the plan one last time, if that's all right."

"Actually, McKenna and I-"

"It's okay, Loki," McKenna caught him by the hand and gave it gentle squeeze. "Go and work out all the last minute kinks. I'll wait up."

Cynthia smiled. "I promise we won't keep him long."

"I know." McKenna forced herself to smile, even though she'd have cheerfully smacked Cynthia for interrupting what promised to be a memorable night.

"Are you certain?" Loki asked, curving his hand against her cheek.

"Yeah. It's fine."

His thumb brushed over her cheek and she had to fight the urge to let her eyelids close, to lean into his touch, as she usually did. His lips brushed hers and he murmured, "I won't be late. I promise."

"I know." She covered his hand with hers and then stepped back, out of his reach. "Good night, Cynthia. Tell Agent May I said good luck, since I'll be heading home tomorrow."

"You should come have breakfast with us." Cynthia rummaged around in her purse, coming up with a room key. "Both of you. We're meeting at eight."

"We'll see what time we wake up tomorrow." Loki turned his grin to Cynthia. "We have plans for tonight."

Cynthia smiled, even as her cheeks grew pink. "Oh... jeez... am I totally ruining your evening?"

"Not totally." Loki winked at McKenna. "But you're postponing them longer than I'd like."

"Damn... Okay, well, like I said, we won't be long." Cynthia gestured to the door behind her. "We're in here."

McKenna sighed as Loki gave her one last kiss and then turned to follow Cynthia into her room. As the door swung shut, McKenna swore beneath her breath and wasn't exactly quiet about shutting the door to her own room.
