CHAPTER FIVE

McKenna glanced up at Loki as they strolled along the promenade, back toward their chambers. "You should've let me stab her."

"It wouldn't be worth it. I don't think Odin would be pleased, if you stabbed the diplomat of the realm that came to us for help."

"I don't like the way she looks at you." She slipped her hand from his and stopped, folding her arms over her chest. "You said last night it wasn't serious between you, but judging by the way she looks at you, I don't think that's true. So, what was she to you?"

He sighed, reaching up to rub his forehead as he leaned back against a marble pillar. "McKenna, she is in the past. She is nothing to me now."

"But she was something to you once." She didn't know why she pressed so hard, but something inside her urged the words from her mouth. She had to know the truth, no matter how much she didn't think she'd like it. And she knew, no matter how Loki might try to pretty it up, she wasn't going to like it.

"Yes, once. But not now."

"Loki."

His hand fell away from his forehead, his arms crossing just like hers. "This is silly, Midgardian. I've told you, you've nothing to worry about."

"I'm not worried." And she wasn't. She trusted Loki. He'd never given her reason to not trust him. "I'm curious."

"Then stop being curious." He unfolded his arms and closed the space between them to catch her face in his hands. "Because your curious is making me crazy."

"Fine, but when you leave Vanaheim, leave her there as well."

"As you wish, love." He brushed her lips with a soft kiss. "Now, I need to change. If you're lucky, I may let you watch."

"Oh, if I'm lucky? If you're lucky, I'll want to watch."

"Come. I'm leaving soon."

"Don't remind me."

Loki held out one hand and she caught it, turning to peer out over the Asgard Sea. It was a beautiful morning, the sunlight warm and the breeze welcoming as they made their way back to their chambers.

"Did I thank you for letting me sleep this morning?" she asked as they entered their chambers by way of the terrace.

"No. You were too busy being jealous."

"I told you, I'm not jealous. I just don't like her and I'm allowed to not like someone, if I choose to not like them."

"That just made my head ache, love. What?"

"I don't have to like everyone, do I?" she asked over her shoulder. "Especially when that someone is someone who's seen you naked."

His chuckle rolled across the room as he vanished into the dressing area of their chambers. "That's the troubling thing? That she's seen me naked? I doubt she even remembers."

"Trust me, Loki, there isn't a woman alive who could possibly forget what you look like naked." She sank onto the marble ledge, shifting to bring her feet up onto it as well. "And don't laugh. It's true."

"Fair enough. You're probably right." He came out of the dressing area and she almost sighed at the sight of him in his formal attire. The same black, green, and gold leather outfit that he'd been wearing the first time she saw him always made her sigh. There was just something about it that made him look at once sexy, powerful, and in command.

"Damn," she murmured, shaking her head. "How much time do you have?"

"Not nearly enough, I'm afraid." He crossed over to her and held out both hands. They were warmer than usual, but still sent the same chill up her arms when she set her hands in his.
