CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN

Red-hot rage burned through Loki as he and Thor came into the room and he saw McKenna lying sprawled on the ground, her dark gray tee shirt soaked with blood. Ward stood over her, a smug smile on his face, and a red haze dropped before Loki's eyes.

Thor held the Tesseract in its protective case, so he couldn't stop him as Loki crossed to the glass wall. With each stride, his green and black leather armor replaced his jeans and Henley, and in his right fist, he held the spear that had once taken the life of Agent Phil Coulson.

A flick of his hand and jerk of his wrist and the glass shattered in a burst of brilliant blue light. Ward swung around just as Loki easily flipped the spear to wield it like a club. The stone part caught Ward in the jaw, sending blood spraying from his mouth as the blow flung him back and off his feet.

The door behind them opened and H.Y.D.R.A agents flooded the room. Loki swung about, jets of blue light spraying in all directions. Bodies flew this way and that and Thor made sure to get whomever his brother couldn't.

Two H.Y.D.R.A. agents grabbed Ward and dragged him out of the room before either Loki or Thor could get to him and Loki didn't give a damn at the moment. All he saw was McKenna, lying motionless, and he had to get to her.

"Go find Coulson," Loki growled, dropping to his knees beside McKenna and setting the spear on the floor at his right knee. He felt the blood drain from his face as he peeled her shirt away from her belly and saw the deep gash still oozing. Blood pooled beneath her, soaking into his leggings, soaking her shirt, smearing her hand, her belly, and her skin had an odd bluish tint to it.

"Oh, dear gods.... no..." he whispered, yanking off his helmet. It clattered to the floor behind him, ignored as he gathered her in his arms. She was breathing, but only barely, and she didn't stir as he pulled her to his chest. "Darling girl, open your eyes for me..."

"Holy shit, McKenna?" A dark haired woman skidded to a stop and dropped to her knees beside them.

As the woman reached for her, Loki snarled, "Leave off!"

"It's okay, Loki. She's one of ours."

Loki looked up to see Phil Coulson standing alongside Thor. The woman kneeling beside them rummaged about beneath her oversized sweatshirt, coming up with a plain white tee shirt. "Here. Pack it against her side."

She didn't wait for him, but reached down to press the wad of cloth against the wound. McKenna let out a low moan, and her eyelids flickered. "We need to get her to Asgard." Loki lifted her easily.

With that, May and Cynthia came into the room, but Loki paid no heed to their reunion as he closed his eyes against the sudden sting of tears. "McKenna, open your eyes. Now."

She did just that and he wanted to cry with relief. They were only slits, but he'd take it. She slowly licked her lips and whispered, "Loki?"

"I'm here, love. You're going to be fine. Do you understand that? You will be fine."

She shook her head. "I don't think so," she whispered weakly.

He swallowed hard against the lump rising in his throat. "I am not going to let you go, darling girl. You're stuck with me."

A weak laugh came to her lips. "Don't make me laugh. It hurts."

He tried to ignore the blood still seeping into the wadded tee shirt, smearing his hands, his armor. He wiggled his fingers and the spear found its way back into his hand. "Thor, we need to get to Asgard. Now."

Loki didn't wait for any answer, but bellowed, "Heimdall! Open the Bifrost!" and tightened his hold on McKenna as the entire room disappeared in rainbow blur.
