CHAPTER FORTY-SIX
The sun warmed the sandy banks of the Sølvfoss and McKenna smiled as a gentle breeze lifted her hair away from her face and sent her skirts fluttered about her legs. It was always so peaceful there, with the silvery water lapping at the beach and the rush of the falls in the distance.
"Where are you?" Strong arms eased about her waist and Loki's voice was a growly whisper in her ear. "You seem miles away."
"I'm right here," she said, sinking back into his chest. She cherished these moments, when the world-all nine of them-disappeared and left her and Loki as the only two people in any of them.
His lips grazed the curve of her neck, soft. Warm. Teasing. They sent a delicious shiver through her, swirling like a heated ribbon through her entire body. Even after all this time, he had the power to reduce her knees to jelly and make her feel like a teenager in the grips of the most powerful crush in existence. Even after all this time, he made her heart race and her stomach flutter, and when his hand merely brushed hers, she found it hard to breathe.
"I love you," he murmured, his lips brushing her ear now. "My beautiful Midgardian."
Silver tongue. Heart of poet. Hands of a tender lover. He was everything to her. Would always be everything to her. She couldn't imagine loving any other man the way she loved this one.
He swept her hair to one side, sent it spilling over her right shoulder, and she shivered as he gently nipped the side of her neck. His hands slid up over her belly and she sighed as they-
Something banged in the distance and Loki and his teasing hands and lips melted away as she found herself staring at the exposed pipes in the ceiling. She groaned, her head throbbing with the remnants of a dream she didn't want to end. "Ohhh..."
Skye's face hovered above her. "You okay?"
McKenna nodded, reaching up to rub her eyes with one hand. Her head pounded as she tried to sit up, and she managed to swing her legs over the edge of the cot before burying her face in both hands. "I think so. Jesus, my head hurts."
"What were you dreaming?" Skye settled on the cot next to her. "All you said was, 'Loki,' so I guess it was something awesome. You were smiling."
McKenna felt her face grow warm and she rubbed both temples. "In Asgard, there's a special place we go to, you know, to get away from everyone."
"Palace life that difficult? Phil told me Loki is some kind of prince?"
McKenna nodded. "Well, his father is a king, so you do the math." She drew her hands away from her face. "I'm sorry. That was really bitchy of me. Yes, Loki is a prince. And believe it or not, I have a title of my own." She forced herself to smile. "Lady McKenna Odinson, Princess of Asgard. I'm still not used to it."
                              "So you're Your Highness?"
She shook her head. "No. They call me Lady McKenna, no matter how many times I tell them McKenna is fine. But anyway, the Sølvfoss is that special place. It's where he proposed to me. It's where I go when I'm there alone and I need to think. It's where we go when we want some alone time. No one else knows it's there."
Skye ran her fingers through her hair to draw it away from her face. "Sounds like a nice place, but how is it no one else knows about it?"
McKenna smiled. "Ah, no one's told you about Loki's special talents."
"After having seen him, I'd have thought his special talents were the ones that only came out behind closed doors," Skye said with a wicked grin and a wiggle of her eyebrows.
