CHAPTER FORTY-ONE
“What’re you thinking about?” McKenna sighed softly as she traced her fingertip down over Loki's belly, smiling as he shivered beneath her touch.
“Nothing at the moment. Just enjoying this,” he murmured, his hand smoothing over her hair. “What time is it?”
She lifted her head, squinting at the clock on her nightstand. “Almost midnight.”
“We should think about getting to sleep. I have to be up early come morning.”
“Aren’t you always up early?”
“Funny. Agent May wishes to meet at seven.”
McKenna sighed. “Be careful, Loki. I have a bad feeling about this.”
With a soft sigh, Loki rolled over to pin her beneath him. “How bad?”
She gazed up at him, just barely able to make out his face in the darkness. She knew he took her feelings seriously and had ever since her first encounter with the Chitauri. “Very bad. And don’t ask me to explain, because I can’t.”
“I will be careful,” he whispered, his lips brushing hers. “I promise.”
“I know.” She hated worrying, especially at such intimate moments like now, when he was so thoroughly kissing her. So she vowed to stop worrying for now and instead enjoyed her husband’s kisses instead.
It didn’t work. Loki lifted his head and whispered, “McKenna…”
“I know, I know. I can’t help it.”
He sighed as he shifted to lay beside her and she waited for him to pull her into his arms, but he didn’t. Instead, he just stared up at the ceiling. “How long have we been together, McKenna?”
“Four years. Almost five.”
“And have you ever known me to not be careful?”
“Loki, I know I sound like such a worrier, but this time I really have a bad feeling about this. It’s not quite the way it was when the Chitauri were in my apartment or at Bay Head, but something isn't right.” She rose onto her elbow and gazed down at him. His dark hair was splayed out over the stark white pillowcase and his eyes glittered in the faint glow of the moonlight slicing in through the windows. “I can’t help it.”
He turned toward her, his eyes softening. “I know. And truth be told, there is something nice in knowing someone cares what becomes of me. But, I have three very good reasons to take the greatest of care.”
“I know. And I know you will. But this is H.Y.D.R.A. I don’t even know what they are, but they sound awful. Especially if they’ve taken control of S.H.I.E.L.D. And with Phil Coulson missing and Bruce and Marie in hiding—I’m glad Aislinn and Selig are in Asgard.”
“As I will be glad when you are in Asgard.” The mattress rustled as he rolled onto his side to face her and his hand curved against her cheek. His thumb grazed her cheek gently. “I will be fine. I promise.”
“You better, Loki.”
He smiled. “I will.”

McKenna sighed as she and Loki paused just outside the Logan’s dining room. She saw Agent May and Cynthia already seated at a table in the corner and had no desire to step into the room and have May shred her again. “I think I’ll just let you guys talk.”
