The revelation happened slowly. First it was the way he'd always blushed when the two got undressed, comfortable enough with each other to change in front of each other. Then it was the way his heart fluttered when Mitch would hold his hand or bring him close for cuddles. That was the night he went home and cried, the new feelings towards boys ,especially towards his bestfriend, being a frightening revelation. He distanced himself, turning away from Mitch when he saw him walking in the halls. He pretended not to see the hurt look on Mitch's face when he brushed past without even a hello or the way Mitch's face would drop when he refused a hug.
The fourth week of ignoring Mitch was when everything changed. Scott slammed his locker shut, turning away and jumping when he saw Mitch leaning against the locker next to him. "We need to talk. After school. Your house." Mitch said seriously, a look on his face that had Scott questioning if he was in trouble. "I- I can't." He winced as he fumbled his words. "Why not?" Scott gulped at Mitch's low tone. He quickly thought up an excuse. "I have choir practice after school." Mitch raised his brow. "Choir practices is Tuesday and Friday, Scotty. It's Wednesday." Scott sighed. "Fine," he ground out reluctantly. The day went by in a blur. Scott dragged his feet as he walked, but still he reached his house.
He went in and up to his room after greeting his parents. He jumped when he noticed Mitch on his bed. "H-Hey Mitch. I was just going to get some snacks, you want anything?" He turned to the door but Mitch called him back, pointing to his bed with a stern finger. "Why are you avoiding me?" He jumped right in, leaving Scott with no time to prepare. Oh god, oh god. What does he tell him? 'Hey Mitch, I think I might be gay and I have feelings for you?' Yeah right. He didn't know when the tears started to fall, but fell into Mitch's arms as the younger boy cradled and rocked him, murmuring that everything was going to be okay. "How did you know you were gay?" Scott choked out when the tear subsided, leaning into the hand that was carving gentle circles on his back. Mitch shrugged. "When I pictured having my first kiss it was with a guy. I tried to date girls, but it always felt wrong. That's when I figured it out."
Scott took a deep breath. He knew Mitch would accept him, would continue to love and support him no matter what. So why was he so scared then? "Mitch, I'm gay." Then he leaned in to kiss him. It wasn't the best first kiss; their nose got in the way and they accidentally bumped their heads together, but when their lips met for the first time, the feeling was indescribable. "Mitch?" Scott breathed, not wanting to ruin the moment. Mitch's answering hum gave him the courage to continue. "I really like you." A shadow passed over Mitch's face but he responded, "I like you too."
