The mind always senses the truth. It tries to warn you. Tries to stop you from getting yourself hurt. Prevents you from getting too close to the fire on a cold, lonely night.

But then there's the heart. It sets itself on something. And it wants what it wants. It refuses to listen to the mind. Because it believes. It believes its dreams will come true. It believes everything will be okay. It believes the person you love will love you back. Eventually.

It trots along like a happy little dog, waiting for his master to turn back and play with him, love him, take care of him. But his master has other priorities and the little dog gets tired, slows down and stops. Eventually.

Wendy gave her all to her relationship with Sam. Even when he said he wasn't sure. She went to him whenever he needed her. Even when she was tired. Even when she had to cancel other plans. Even when her mind told her he didn't feel the same. Even when she was on her way home alone way past midnight, because his parents were coming over the next day and he didn't want them to see her in his apartment.

Her mind told her bluntly that he didn't care. He never did. Never would.

But her heart refused to give up. Her heart believed he would love her eventually. And her heart broke every time he let her be his last priority.

Wendy walked up to her apartment, feeling pleasantly buzzed with the wine. Yet a part of her felt like crying.

She had kept glancing at her phone all evening. Waiting for it to buzz. Waiting for Sam to message. He never did.

She smiled tightly at Fred as he shut her apartment door behind him.

She tossed her bag on to the couch as she drifted into her bedroom.

Fred followed her and nuzzled her neck.

She leaned back against the man behind her, wishing it was Sam.

She glanced at her phone again. Nothing.

A spark of anger flared up in her. She had given him four years of her life. And for what?

Was he really working late all those nights or was he with another woman?

Who was he chatting with late at night when she would go to text him good night and see he was already online?

Did she even know him as well as she thought she did?

He always kept his feelings to himself. Even when she said she loved him.  What was she to him anyway? Just his fuck buddy?

The anger grew in her and she blinked away tears as the man in her room caressed her.

She turned to face him with a seductive smile. "Just hold on a moment." She said softly.

Clutching her phone tight, she shut herself in the bathroom.

Tears of anger and disappointment spilled down her face.

Swiping them away she looked at her phone resolutely.

Methodically, she opened her social media accounts one by one and deleted the man she loved from her life.

Lastly, her finger hovered over his number in her contact list.

She remembered that late night drive. Terrified about her safety. While Sam bluntly told her she couldn't stay over. That was the night she should've realised where she stood in his life.

Her mind had warned her. And her heart refused to listen.

Not anymore.

Viciously, she hit block.

She never heard from Sam again.

Not too far away, Sam's cold body was shut away in the morgue, as she let the man in her bed pull her warm body to his.
