Third Month
~Flashback~
"Alright," Nick began eating peanuts again as we laid on our blanket for the picnic. He finished laughing hysterically but held a smile. "How about kids. Do you want them and how many?" He asked as he looked up at me with hopeful eyes. His green eyes taking in my appearance as I laid on my hand with my elbow propping me up. I was a little shocked by the question.
"Well," I began. I honestly, hadn't thought about kids of my own, which was ironic because I worked with kids. "Hmm," I said racking my brain more as I grabbed for more honey roasted peanuts. "Honestly, I'm not sure." I said popping a peanut in my mouth and began chewing. He laughed.
"Nope. That's not fair you have to have some sort of answer." He said winking and smiling at me as I stuck my tongue out at him. I chuckled at his expression and began again.
"Alright. Hmm," I began again, really thinking hard on the topic. Did I want kids? Would I be a good mom? "Yes." I mumbled, surprise at my sudden answer I spoke a little louder. "Yes, I want kids." I said laughing a little at myself. I looked back into Nick's eyes and they beamed back at me.
He popped more peanuts into his mouth and took a sip of wine. I laughed as he was avoiding the topic. "Well?" I asked as I jokingly slapped his chest. "Do you?" I asked, this time just as hopeful as he was earlier.
"Hmm," he trailed off as he jokingly looked up into the night sky.
I slapped his chest again and we both laughed as he pulled me into his arms. We rolled onto our backs and laid on the blanket looking into the night sky. We traveled to a Bed and Breakfast on the hill while we drove to the coast for our honeymoon. Now, we laid looking at the different stars in the dark navy blue sky. I laid my head into his shoulder and held my hand on his stomach.
"Yes," he whispered down at me. "I want everything with you." I looked up smiling and he tilted his head back slightly to look in my eyes. His green eyes swirled closer to my face until they closed and my lips were met with his. He wrapped his arms around me and he rolled so that I was on top of him. He then sat up, eventually being able to carry me back to the bed and breakfast.
~Flashback ended~
I exited the doctor's office with my new ultrasound pictures in hand and smiled as I held my arm above my new little baby bump. I couldn't wait to tell Nick that we were having a little girl. I looked down at the pictures again and thought of what she might look like. I hoped she would have Nick's green eyes and my hair. I wanted her to have Nick's personality and his strength in character.
I thought of all the characteristics that our little girl would have and smiled as I drove down the road. I must have been distracted by thoughts because I ran a red light and was hit by a truck. The suddenness of it all hit me as I spun in a tight, screeching circle. Round and Round, I prayed to not let any harm come to our baby as eventually the car stopped.
I began to close my eyes, I was so tired all of the sudden. I sat looking one last look out to traffic and saw the man from the truck getting out and running to my car. I remember looking down at our little girl and rubbing my stomach before eventually falling asleep.
Images of flashing lights went by as I felt myself being pushed by doctors. I looked over and saw a man looking down at me as he ran next to my cart.
"Mrs. Anderson, hang in there everything will be just fine." I heard the urgency in his voice and I slowly drifted back to sleep as shock overwhelmed me.
"Tell Nicky." I mumbled.
