Chapter 12: Y

I dropped my bike and jaw. I mean, finding an oak tree can't be that hard.

But trying to find ONE particular one in a sea of oak? I don't know it's a bit of a challenge. And Brooke knew it.

"Look it can't be that hard we just have to find the one that has the marking on it." Tyler began looking at the trees' trunks and scanning them for engravings.

"Tyler forget it! We won't be able to find it because it's already getting dark! The sun is gonna go down any minute and we'll be running around in the dark." And with that, Ty's light bulb went off.

"That's it! How about you and Jade go back to the house, ask for a flashlight then comeback! Then we can keep looks cause to be honest, there's only like 20 trees here so it can't be that hard." Brooke took a moment to think about what Ty just said, then nodded in approval. She got on her bike and start a steady pace back to the house, and I followed her.

We stopped in front of the driveway and trotted up to the door, reentering the loud rave. The noise was still loud and the people were still jumping. Me and Brooke tried to eye any type of flashlight from the entrance but had no luck.

"How about we split up and look for it? We can cover more ground." Brooke nodded and gave me a thumbs up and she ran off to her left. I ran to the right into a hall with bedroom doors.

I felt pretty optimistic in finding the light sooner but leaving Brooke alone in a place like this was a horrible idea.

I totally regretted it when I ran to her area to let her know there was no sign of a flashlight and I found her passed out on the kitchen island.

"Brooke!" She rolled over to sit up. She began to laugh and smile a very familiar sly smile.

"Jade those drinks just kept comin and comin," but I didn't need to hear more. I carefully picked her up and lectured her on how I thought she was fine and why did she have to get more and all that boring stuff. She just rolled her eyes and made a "you-talk-too-much" hand gesture. I carried her through the large sweaty crowd and into the bedroom to let her rest as I kept searching for the light.

Suddenly she grabbed my wrist, not hard and demanding as she usually does, but soft.

"Wait, Jade, where are you going," her grey eyes were half closed and she didn't seem as "drunk".

"Going to look for the flashlight. You need to stay here and relax, take a nap or something." But just as I was gonna get up she wrapped her arms around me and pulled me to her side. I layed there motionless as she sat up.

"C'mon sit up," and I did as I was told. We sat there in complete silence until she said something. I held my breath and kept deathly still.

"Remember how we used to go to parties and be morons?" She giggled, so did I.

"And how we used to dance to that song," She gasped, "Oh my god, that was like the best song ever." She smiled down and stayed silent. I reached down to my pocket and pulled out my iPod, and played the oh-so-memorable song.

She slightly opened her mouth but quickly shut it. I stood up and held out my hand for her to take it. As the song came to the chorus I held her hand and held her waist with my other. It was an old, but familiar feeling. We swayed to the quiet and subtle beat of "Stuck In the Middle With You" and didn't say a word. Even though the song is only 3 or 4 minutes long I felt like it was 3 or 4 years. I remembered how we used to always dance to this song, and how she would smile and laugh...

As the song came towards its end, I spun her around slowly while she kept her eyes locked on mine. Once she came back around to face me, we stood like that for what seemed like an eternity. Both of my hands were now on her small and delicate waist and her hands were wrapped around my neck. She slowly lowered them to softly hold my shoulders.

I coudn't help it. I let go of everything that happened, and I... I... I kissed her.

She began to kiss back and before I knew it we were lying on the bed and back in 8th grade. I felt sparks in my heart and heard her excited and hard breathing. I held her face and she ran her hands through my hair. I could feel myself drown in her kiss. Brooke began to feel like a drug. Then I remembered what I had forgotten.

Brooke was a drug I had to quit.

I abruptly came out of the kiss and saw her still lying under me, looking at me with confusion in her dark eyes.

I stood up and straightend my shirt, "Brooke, I'm sorry I can't do this."

Brooke slowly sat up and fixed her hair and stood up in front of me. I saw the light disappear in her eyes and anger replace it.

"Jade, you know what, you're a real jerk you know that?"

"Me?" I pointed to my self sarcastically, "Why am I the jerk?"

Her voice began to crack as it got louder, "Jade ever since you broke it off you've acted like we never even happened like you never even loved me!"

"I HAD to act like it didn't happen Brooke! It just wasn't meant to be," I yelled.

"Brooke I had way too much on plate! With my dad dead and my mom in prison and everything just falling apart, I felt like I couldn't really be there for you so yes, yes Brooke I let you go." Her eyes began to water but she still held her anger.

"You had too much? Really! WHAT ABOUT ME JADE! I've NEVER HAD MY PARENTS! And then Blake, freaking beating me up and going to who knows where. Oh and then Bryon. Remember him? Remember how he said he would be here for me? HE LEFT JADE! HE LEFT BLAKE, HIS OWN WIFE, AND ME!!!"

Brooke fell to her knees and just cried. I sat down in front of her. She cried and cried as hot tears fell down her face. She continued as she gained a little bit of her composure.

"Jade I needed you, and you left. You left because you thought it woudn't be enough," She looked up at me with her tears all wiped off her face, but water still building up in her red eyes. I stroked her cheek and she pushed back my stray hairs. I smiled and she made a small giggle.

"Brooke I'm sorry. You're right I wasn't there and I should've been."

She punched my arm playfully and smiled, "You should've been moron."

I leaned in and kissed her again, and the room silenced so that the only audible sound was the synced beat of our hearts.

"I love you Brooke."

"I love you Jade."

*buzz buzz*

Tyler : DUDE WHERE ARE YOU IT'S BEEN LIKE HALF AN HOUR!!

We both looked at each other and said in unison,

"CR*P!"
