The rest of the afternoon was spent with all three of us messing around. After such a heavy topic, a little fun was sorely needed.
First off, we played a game of tag. This consisted of either Alanna or myself running off to set Ryan on a sturdy looking branch that was drooping low enough for us to reach. While Ryan was giggling and clinging to said branch, the person who was 'it' would dramatically walk round and talk aloud how they were wondering where the 'little munchkin' was.
I have to admit it was embarrassingly hilarious and you couldn't help but laugh when you were acting like you belong in a pantomime. I was half expecting someone to shout out 'she's behind you!'
Ah, me and my overactive imagination.
After that we went butterfly hunting. Ryan would chase a butterfly with his little legs and fall over only to get back up laughing then continue tormenting the poor airborne bugs. Alanna helped me out to catch them in our hands like a little box but the majority of our time was spent tripping over invisible stones or crashing into each other when we weren't paying attention. I now have multiple bruises to look forward to in the morning.
When I finally managed to catch one, I called Ryan over and set it free near him. It fluttered over our heads then swooped down and nearly took my eye out in its vengeful assault.
Despite that particularly evil butterfly, it was worth all the trouble and pain. Ryan was doubled over laughing instantly and Alanna wasn't too far behind.
Then, to finish to evening off, we went to get some ice-cream in the open part of the park. We walked over to the pond where the ducks were and sat down to watch.
A few ducks even waddled over close to us. One in particular mustered up the courage and came over to Alanna. She gave it the end bit of her ice-cream cone because she was near finished and it immediately took a liking to her. After a while she was getting a little creeped out so I attempted to shoo it away.
Keyword being attempted.
The duck, however, did not like this at all and bit my finger in return.
Shocked, I flinched and pulled my arm back. My baby finger stung slightly but not as much as my pride. Alanna and Ryan were laughing at my expense yet again. First a crazed butterfly, now a psychotic duck. Lovely.
I jumped up and tried to shoo the duck away again, waving my arms at it and looking like a weirdo. The duck was having none of it and dove at my feet which made me jump back. It repeated this a few more times before it gave up and awkwardly ran at me.
And so, the story of how I was chased by a duck was created.
I started to half jog, half run away from the duck but it was pretty damn determined. It chased me a couple laps round the pond which attracted the attention of the entire park. People were filming it with their phones and everyone was laughing. My face was burning up rapidly.
Tired, the duck gave up and waddled back to the pond and it's brethren, acting like nothing happened. I jogged back to Alanna and Ryan who were still chuckling and couldn't help but start laughing as well.
If I don't have a six pack after that then I shall strangle that duck.
The last of the sunlight was streaming through the trees and we decided it was time to go home. Trudging towards the exit, we were all reluctant to go. Days like this were few and far between. We don't get to spend much time together and even then we don't usually get as much time. Today was rare and we savored every minute of it.
Unfortunately, we had to get back.
"C'mon, I'll give you a ride home." I mumbled. Alanna nodded to show she had heard.
