You've known him for years. But he was only your friend for about half of those years. After elementary school, your best friend in the entire world, ditched you.

Because he was cool, and you weren't.

You were upset for a little while. You tried to grab his attention by coming over to his house nearly every day, naively believing he was going to come back to reading in the library instead of being with others at lunch.

But after some time you just gave up on him. If he wanted to be artificial and fake, let him. You were going to excel in your studies ans make it out on top, you could feel it.

That's... Not how high school worked.

"You failed your math test again, Y/N?" Jiyeon asked in surprise, glancing over at your paper. A 23 out of a 100 point grade. It was pretty bad, but it wasn't your lowest. You were surprised you didn't get any notes written in red ink from your algebra teacher. Maybe he gave up.

"Miss Y/N... Please see me at my desk.."

Or, maybe not..

You gathered your stuff neatly onto your desk, hiding the paper underneath a folder. Just because you've been barely squeaking by school for the past four years doesn't mean you're not self conscious about those grades.

"Y/N.." the teacher firmly reminded you, more sternly this time. You sighed and got up, weaving your way around the desks until  you were standing at his desk.

"Yes, sir?"

Mr. Kangneul shuffled through a few of your records. "You're not going to pass this year. You're going to be help back unless you can barely pass with a low D. I've done everything I could think of to do for you. I've given you a student tutor, Miss Jiyeon over there, and I made sure you have turned in all of your homework. You are still failing."

"Sir.." You wracked your brain trying to find the words of the familiar conversation you've had with nearly every one of your teachers over the years. "My brain just doesn't want to work with school. I can't do it."

"That's why you have failing grades," he deduced loosely. It was annoying for both of you, but there was no reason for him to just use the stereotypical answer teachers always come to conclude, when it's not true at all. That God damned "if you think you can or think you can't, you're right" bull crap they feed you.

The irratation showed in your expression and the way you held yourself up in front of him. "So, what do you want me to do about it, sir?"

"The only possible think I can think of.. I'm going to hold you after school every day for an hour for extra help," Mr. Kangneul answered finally, a creasing  forming between his eyebrows. "I can't keep my classroom open, so you'll have to stay in the detention room. Is this a suitable arrangement, or would you prefer to fail a year below your class."

"It will suffice, sir," you nodded very slightly, holding your head at an angle so you had to peer down at him like a hawk. It was your attempt at getting the point across that if there's any funny business, you will be the first to put a stop to it. You've stayed after school before, but you'd feel much more comfortable if the person who suggested you stay for extra help wasn't a middle aged man who's known for his sexism.

"Very well, Miss Y/N. I'll see you after school in the detention room."

You gave him another small wary nod in affirmation and sat back down without saying anything. Jiyeon leaned over to your desk, her hair covering up a note she'd left on your desk for the moment.
