Astrid's p.o.v

"So", I began, sitting down to join Norman and Amy around the table in the canteen, "what are our plans?"
"Plans?" Norman replied, clearly somewhat confused.
"Plans to go out for a day? Our break from work is only two days long and apart from then we're not supposed to leave the helicarrier." Amy stated, "so our 'plans' will be fairly basic I presume?"
"Not necessarily." I replied grinning slightly.
"Astrid, please don't do something that will get us on the bad side of our superiors..." Norman said sipping from his coffee.
Amy also looked worriedly in my direction.

"As if I would", I said, pausing before adding, "One trip to go sightseeing and somewhere for coffee will hardly get us all killed".
"Astrid", Amy moaned, "we are only allowed to leave 'for our own leisure time once every two months for no longer than two days, and are you sure that's the best use of our weekend?"
"Yeah, it'll be relaxing and good to get some air. I miss being on land, don't you guys miss it too? Besides I need to go shopping for some basic supplies and I thought we deserved a short break. You know what its gonna be like round here over the next few weeks. What with the internal inspection of our bases coming up soon and the plethora of political events in the world, we're not likely to get much time to relax" I explained as persuasively as possible before taking another bite of my sandwich.

"Okay." Norman said.
"Hmm... Fine, I could do with getting a few things too." Amy seconded after a little contemplation.

Just then the day took an unpleasant turn as Julie strutted towards us followed by her boyfriend Derek. The three of us had only been here for about three months and she already hated us for no apparent reason. Derek always followed her lead and so he hated us too. It always puzzled me how they stayed in a job here, they even looked ridiculous. I suppose that's why they worked in the administrative and financial departments at little desks in huge offices rammed with other people and weren't field agents like we were currently training to be.

"What are the misfits doing at the table we wanted today?" She said sharply.
Ugh, did she still think she was in high school or something?

"Yeah freaks. Get another table." Derek added trying to sound intimidating and failing miserably as usual.

Amy and Norman glanced at me as if to say "it's not worth it, let's leave."

Julie's face was heavily made-up and she had peroxide blond hair in tight little ringlets. Everything about her reminded me of years of just letting girls like her in high school push me around. I had always bottled up my anger and refrained from causing a scene but I had changed. Unlike this ridiculous girl stood in front of me, I had grown up fast from high school. I wasn't going to let people like her push me around my whole life because it made things 'easier' anymore. I stood up and looked her straight in the eye,

"No. There are a dozen other places to sit, so i'm sorry to say that we were here first and we have no intention of moving to another table" I said calmly.

"Is the reason you feel so self entitled because you've had tea with the Queen?" She snorted with laughter.

"Good one." Derek praised her.

I rolled my eyes. This was yet another reason I didn't like her in the first place, she kept making fun of Amy and I for our English accents... and just couldn't make a decent joke.

"How was eating at mcdonald's with the president then?" I said, just to try and make her see how stupid she sounded.

Instead she looked confused.

Amy and Norman shared a worried glance; we all remembered the events that happened three months ago and although I'd had no real reoccurrences, we weren't likely to ever forget. I had, after all, almost destroyed an entire block and done considerable damage to the surrounding area too. Perhaps i'd better not get too angry...
"You only hate America because it's better than your stupid ass country" she smiled.
I sighed. I personally liked living here mostly, sure I missed a few things about home, but idiots giving people a hard time and making their own country look bad in the process were not things I valued about either the UK or the US. Sadly, I had long since accepted that there were stupid people everywhere; it was a fact of life.
