Alice stood against a wall of the teenage boy's room. She took in the various pieces of paper strewn about carelessly as well as the dirty laundry that was scattered in every corner. It was only a moment until her brain snapped back to reality and remembered where she was. She had so many questions she needed answers for and it felt like she'd never catch up on the three years she missed.
But as Peter stood ten feet away from her, she forgot all of that. All that matters was that he friend hadn't said anything in over ten minutes.
"I'm sorry. It's just - I can't believe you're actually alive." He breathed, not looking away from the piercing blue eyes that looked back at him.
"Me either." She replied simply, fiddling with her hands in front of her body - something she had never done, her training wouldn't allow it.
"I'm sorry about the - uh - the holding you thing. I know that you don't really like that." He bowed his head, slightly ashamed he hadn't listened to what she told him three years ago on board the alien space ship they had snuck upon.
"It's okay." She shrugged, slightly ashamed to admit she enjoyed being so close to him. If her HYDRA experimenters could hear those thoughts, they'd waste no time in throwing her in solitary confinement for a month until she learned not to value human interaction.
Something they had done many a time to nine year old Alice with newly awoken powers.
"Can I ask you something?" Peter asked simply, taking a few steps closer to the girl. She nodded in response, waiting patiently. "What was it like? Death, I mean. Because we weren't in the same place."
She wasn't expecting that. She'd only been awake for a matter of hours and yet she couldn't escape.
"It was dark." She breathed. "I was alone, it was an endless plane. All I could do was walk." She had to pause as her emotions caught up to her. "I tried to yell for help, for anybody to hear me but there was nothing and no one." She couldn't talk any longer as she broke down into tears.
Peter wasted no time in closing the space between the pair and wrapping his arms around her shaking figure. He hugged her tightly as he soothed her cries. She fought for a minute, struggling against his arms but Peter knew enough about human biology to understand he needed to compress her central nervous system for any chance at her calming down. As Alice stopped fighting Peter's tight grasp, he let out a heavy exhale of relief. In another situation, she wouldn't have hesitated to rip his arm from its socket but the allowed herself to melt into his arms - she just left it down to pure emotional and physical exhaustion.
