"God, you would think people would buy their coffee before they go to the airport," Veronica Romero complained as her and Sage Parrish waited in the line at Starbucks. Sage shot her a dumbfounded look.
"And yet, here you are because you didn't buy coffee before you came to the airport. I am surprised that you didn't though, considering you are addicted." Veronica rolled her eyes at the statement.
"For the one hundredth time, I am not addicted to caffeine, Sage," she said, rolling her eyes at the completely true accusation. The Parrish girl laughed.
"The utter audacity you have to say that! You've literally quoted John Mulaney over twenty times in the last thirty minutes because you can't form anything intelligible to say."
"That is such a lie!"
"It's not! You told me about the horse in the hospital in the cab on the way over here! The same cab that you could have used to swing by Starbucks before you picked me up. Now, am I right or am I right?" Veronica looked over at Sage's smug face and sighed.
"Touché. Are we gonna go over your checklist or what?" Sage's face suddenly lit up at the mere mention of her checklist and Ronnie smiled lightly to herself— she adored how much pride Sage took in being organized. Once Sage fished her phone out of her pocket, a rapid set of questions was fired at Veronica.
"Check-in?"
"Check."
"Gave them our luggage to put on the plane?'
"Double check."
"Did we barely make it past security because someone still had coins in her pocket?"
"Hey! I didn't know they were in there!"
"So, that's a triple check. Find our boarding gate?"
"Quadruple check."
"Get coffee?"
"Almost a quintuple check. And it's caffeine juice," Ronnie corrected, causing Sage to roll her eyes.
"Whatever," Sage said, just as it was her turn at the register. During her order though, she shifted her body slightly towards Veronica while glancing down at the baked goods next to her.
"Should I get a croissant? I don't want to spend all of my money buying stuff from here," she reasoned. Veronica gave her a shrug.
"I'll buy it for you." Sage turned quickly to Ronnie, flashing her a bright smile and resting her hand on her arm.
"Thanks!" Veronica could only nod. Her mind and heart raced. Long after they ordered and sat down (and after Ronnie bought the croissant), her heart continued to race at the memory of Sage's smile and touch. Her smile was beautiful and her touch soft. She replayed the moment over and over in her head before something moved, causing her to tune back into reality.
