Sobs.

They echoed off the walls and rang in Lance's ears.

He was curled up in the corner of his nest. Thankful Hunk and Pidge has been scenting the blankest while he was gone. He rolled himself in the smell of the betas, trying his hardest to calm himself down.

Lance wanted to think about this rationally. He wanted to be angry with them for deciding this for him. He wanted to be angry that Keith hadn't apologized for hurting his pup. However he felt the most anger towards himself.

He was angry he made Shiro upset. As ridiculous as it sounds, no omega could take a scolding from a head alpha and not feel bad. He should be angry at everyone. But at the same time, he knew he was also in the wrong.

If only he was better at being a beta. None of this would have happened. If he could have just ignored his stupid instincts. If only he was stronger.

He felt a pang in his chest, remembering what Shiro had told him. He couldn't help how he felt though. After years of drilling by his father, he couldn't just forget what he was brainwashed to believe.

Lance's sobs paused

Brainwashed?

That was a start. Actually admitting to himself his dad was in the wrong.

But he would have hated mom to right? If he really thought omegas were worthless, wouldn't he have wanted mom to act like a beta too?

But that was his father's mate. You can't deny the connection you have with your soulmate. That's your destined partner. Just like how Keith and Shiro have each other. If they listened to society, they wouldn't be alive today.

Rejecting the bond of a mate kills. The pair become depressed and soon die off.

Soulmates were the bottom line. Lance would do anything for his future soulmate; it's genetics. He was alive to find the one he was destined for. That was his purpose: to serve and care for his mate.

He didn't have to be happy. He hadn't been happy since he presented, what was the rest of his life?

No.

He couldn't keep going like this. He remembered how awful it had been. The constant tightness in his chest thinking everyone knew. The punishments he gave himself for not being beta enough. Losing his family didn't compare to how miserable he had been for the past five years hiding what he really liked to do and what he hated doing.

He wanted to cook, talk to people about how they were doing, instead of flirting with everything on two legs.  He wanted to take care of Pidge and Hunk. He wanted to stop lying about his past. He wanted to be the omega of the pack.

His lion let a long purr resign in her paladin. She kept sending him waves of encouragement. He needed this. The connection between them needed him to be himself.

But this wasn't about Voltron. This was about Lance accepting himself.

This was his life. His identity. He can't remember the last time he was happy. He wanted to know what that was like again. Lance needed to know what it was like again. To feel light, and bubbly and without a care in the world.

The omega uncurled himself, sitting up in the nest he had built, the nest he was proud to call his own. No longer would he allow himself to hate his nature.

But that doesn't happen overnight. And that won't happen for Lance unless he has support. He still needed praise, comfort, and reassurance like any other omega. So that's what he will do. He will get the help he needs. He will work towards his expectancy. He will  be proud of what he is, for the first time in his life.
