The alarm bell went off out of nowhere. I was napping in my chair and my brain was lagging, but this was the sound I recognized even through the brain-fog. The fire alarm. I ran out of my office and light smoke hit me immediately. People ran downstairs in panic, trying to memorize the escape plan. Everybody saw and smelled the smoke, but no one knew there was the fire. I've gone through an evacuation like this before, so I tried to control the mass of panicking people flowing down the stairs.
We ran out of the building without further prompting. Matthias bolted out of the back door, coughing and ordered everyone to stay back and form a group. We obeyed and Kevin began counting us. Then we saw it. The roof was caught on fire and the flames were slowly walking down the walls, devouring the place.
Thankfully, it was only one out of three offices the company owns and not all friends and employees were exposed to the fire, but still a whole lot of our work, money and commitment was being eaten by fire, which was devastating. When PAs were arguing about the fire source and our boss was calming down everybody, suddenly Kevin made a chilling statement.
"We're missing someone." We all froze in fear, until Cj realized who was the missing person.
"CONNOR!" He shouted. Everybody started panicking again.
"Oh no!"
"Oh shit!"
"Oh my god..."
"Please everybody calm down. We'll figure out how to get him to safety, okay?" Matt tried to reassure everyone, but it was almost impossible as a thought of our friend burning alive crossed our minds with brutal accuracy.
It was unbearable to just sit and watch all of this. I've decided to step out and help a friend. I've done this before... I believed that I had what it takes to save Connor. Plus, I got a whooping shot of adrenaline, which was really needed.
"Matt, let me go in."
"No, (Y/n), it's my responsibility to keep you save. I can't risk any more lives."
"I've been through that kind of emergency before. I think I know what to do. Please, let me help him."
"You think?" He questioned.
"I know what to do." I corrected, wiping off the hesitation and bolted into the building through a smashed window.
"(Y/n), come back! IT'S AN ORDER!" Matt shouted, but I was far gone.
Before flames started surrounding me, I targeted Connor's office. It was on the first floor. Fire didn't cover the stairs yet, so I had to hurry. The stairs were making terrifying creaking sounds as I ran up them. Keeping that in mind, I started planning a different exit in case the stairs'll be gone by the time I find Connor.
"CONNOR!?" I call.
"(Y/n)? Over here!" I hear his voice coming from the hallway. I run up there and see a massive burned log, blocking the way and crushing Connor's leg.
"Oh my lord, your leg!"
"(Y/n)! Thank god! Help me, please. I'm stuck." I wrapped my hands in the sleeves of hoodie I was wearing and began pushing the log off of Connor. Luckily it was half-burned and therefore, lighter.
"You alright? Can you walk?"
"Yeah, I wasn't hurt, just trapped." He hissed, while trying to rub off the pain from the burns. The rescue was going so smooth I started to get suspicious. And damn, I was right. All of the sudden temperature jumped uncomfortably high and I started feeling nauseous from all the carbon oxides released to the air.
"How did you get there?" Connor asked.
"Stairs." I manage to reply shortly through the dense air. "Man, it's getting hot..." Connor looked at me in concern and took over the rescue mission. We grabbed my hand and dragged me to the exit, but when we came where the stairs were supposed to be, there was a pile of sharp pieces of wood and burned trash which ones was a staircase. When I looked down, I felt nauseous and dizzy. Exit is gone. We're stuck in the fire. God, it's so hot... I can't breathe in here...
Connor's pov:
Unfortunately, we were late. The stairs were devoured by fire. That's also when (Y/n) started to sway on her feet.
"Hey, are you alright?"
„I need... I need air... I need to lay down." (Y/n) said with some clear difficulties in breathing. Oh no.
"I know, but you can't right now. We have to get out. There's the other exit at the end of the floor. We can get to it-" as I got enlightened and took over the rescue mission, she started to fall down. I managed to catch her before she fainted. "(Y/n), get up! Hey, stay with me! (Y/n)!" No avail. She ran out of oxygen. And if I don't hurry up, I'll join her soon.
Luckily I remembered about the second passage. My heart was pounding. Not sure if it was because we had a life-or-death situation here or because I was carrying the woman of my dreams in my arms. I know it sounds so cheesy, but I've liked her since forever now and every time I tried to tell her I'd always chicken out, afraid of losing her.
Today made me realize I could lose her for real. We could die. I picked her up bridal style and rushed to the other exit, running around and between all the obstacles and fire. Oh god, please (Y/n), stay with me. Then, I saw the door, but I started to feel dizzy too, and there was fire. I hugged (Y/n) to my chest and ran through that hallway as fast as I could. The heat was unbearable, but I couldn't give up. I had to for myself and her.
We burst through the door. There's an ambulance coming at the other end of the street. I call out for help. They arrive and suddenly (Y/n) disappears in the ambulance as they patch up my burns and give me oxygen mask. Some colleagues heard my cries from the other side of the building and came running. Everything was happening so fast. Where is (Y/n)? Is she alright?
She must live. I need to tell her something very important. If we survive and I see her beautiful eyes again, I'm going to tell her the truth.
Your POV:
I woke up in the hospital. Crap. That didn't go as planned. My shoulder was bruised and I had burns on my body. First thing I thought about was where's Connor. Did he make it? As I was about to panic, I felt a warm hand stroke my leg. I spotted Connor sitting by my bed, safe and sound.
"Hey, how are you?" Connor asked in the most calming, caring voice I have ever heard.
"Happy to see you. If my body wasn't aching so much, I'd jump out of this bed and hug you." I admitted.
"Yeah. Sorry about the shoulder, I kinda burst through the door as I carried you to safety."
"I hate you sometimes." I joked and we shared a giggle before Connor got all serious, cupped my hand and took a deep breath.
"(Y/n), I... I don't know what to say. You literally ran into the burning building to help me. Dammit, it wasn't supposed to be like this!"
"What you do mean? Why not?"
"Because, (Y/n)... it's gonna sound extremly cheesy, but I was going to ask you out today..."
"WHAT?" I couldn't believe it. "Connor, I- why are you telling me this right now?"
"I almost lost you today, it made me realize that the future can surprise you at any corner of life. And there's no reason of keeping feelings for someone else inside. Especially... if you mean it."
"Connor, you really mean it?"
"I mean everything I said. I love you, (Y/n) and I wanted to ask you out, but... I can't."
"What's the problem?"
"You just saved my life. I... I don't deserve you." he said and turned his head away. I awed in heart and sat closer to Connor, tilting his chin upwards and placing a gentle kiss on his lips. He was surprised, but never pulled away.
"Actually, you were the one who carried me unconscious out of there, so let's call it even."
"I... I guess."
"And technically you can still ask me out."
"Well, what would you say to that?" I laid back on the bed and smiled at him.
"I'd love to."
