New Years Eve. Back at a familiar house, with familiar people, and like a second chance for nothing to go wrong. Except the one wrong thing that was the beginning of something so great and wonderful.
Jon's house, another party. This time, there's someone always waiting at the door so nobody could bring anything that risks anyone getting in trouble and/or arrested.
This person, sporting the bright red hair again, is Gerard. Right now, there's no reason to be at the door, so Tyler and Ruby are talking to him.
"Y'know I can't believe your mom let you stay this late at a party with people she doesn't know." He says, remembering Ruby wasn't present at the last party.
"She's cool with it. Nice hair, by the way. It suits you."
"What? Come on, you've seen it before."
"I just really like that color."
"Of course you do, you're Ruby."
Tyler didn't want to sit and be awkward this time. "It really does suit you," he says.
Ruby gestured to him and says, "See, someone else agrees!"
Gerard moved his hair out of his face with his fingers. He's also wearing a middle finger ring.
"Hey! You got a ring too!" Tyler exclaimed, before showing him and Ruby his plain little titanium ring.
"I had the mistake of getting a copper one." Ruby enters. "I had green residue on my finger that I thought was a bruise." She held out her hand, a golden looking ring with red gems, like a queen would wear. "It was only a dollar. Nicole got a silver one with blue glass so we'd match, but still look different."
"That's cute." Gerard comments.
"So we're all doing the rings now?" Tyler asks.
"Well, yeah." Ruby replied. "It started with Ryan and now it's like a pack thing. I wanted a ring for me and Nicole because of Brendon and Ryan's matching Sun and Moon rings, but you and Josh made it take off.
They realized they were the only ones inside the house when Brendon opened the back door and yelled "Come out here, it's almost time!"
Tyler brought his ukulele with him to the party for some reason. Maybe to show off the rainbow American flag he put on it, or to use the case he got for Christmas. He got outside and took it out of the case after getting away from the crowd. Josh seemed to appear behind him.
"Waiting for the fireworks?"
"What?"
"The fireworks. We're not far from the stadium."
"Oh. Right." Tyler shifted the case behind him and positioned his instrument to play it. "Did you see the sticker I got?"
"Dude! That's sick!"
"I don't think anyone else has seen it. Wonder if I could bring it to school one day."
"Maybe. On the last day or something."
The booming announcer at the stadium starts the countdown to midnight from 20, making everyone in the backyard chant with the amplified voice. The boys look at each other, and count down with the crowd.
17, 16, 15...
They shuffle closer together and Tyler puts his ukulele at his side.
12, 11, 10...
Tyler now hold the small instrument in the air, knowing how light it is, almost like he's waving the flag he pasted on its body.
7, 6, 5...
The chanting grows louder.
4, 3, 2...
Tyler shut his eyes as he could almost feel the earth turning. He had nothing to worry about it, since Josh locked him in place with a kiss.
Fireworks exploded in the sky, somehow three times as loud as the announcer. Even with all the noise, Tyler positioned the instrument and played a few chords. Over the noise, he sings,
You with the sad eyes
Don't be discouraged
Oh I realize it's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
And the darkness inside can make you feel so small
But I see your true colors shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors, your true colors are beautiful
Like a rainbow
