July 29th, 1957. 4:34 pm, The Sacramento Performance Hall
"Y'know Peggy Sue moved here t'Sacremento," Buddy says as he hands me his guitar case and suit bag.
"Really?" I ask. "Is that why she essentially fell off the face of the Earth?"
Buddy nods. "Yeah, something 'bout her parents. Jerry somehow got a hold of her and invited her t'the show,"
"Huh, that's crazy. I haven't seen her in forever!"
Buddy grabs an amp in each hand and we start to walk inside the side door of the performance hall that we've been scheduled in. "I know, Jerry just 'bout cried,"
"Wait, is that why he's been so...hyper today?"
"I think so,"
"Damn it, he's even harder to tame than he was in high school,"
"If he sees her while we're onstage, I dunno if he's gonna be able t'keep the beat,"
"Thus we pray," I smile.
We get to the backstage door and the guard stops us. "Who's she?" He asks, nodding to me.
"My wife," Buddy rolls his eyes. "She's with The Crickets. She's with me,"
The guard narrows his eyes then shrugs. "Okay, whatever you say. What's your name?" He asks me.
"Um, Violet?" I reply.
"Okay, I'll remember you. If you need backstage and it's a different guard, tell 'em that Maurice said it's okay,"
"Thank you," I say, following Buddy into the long hallway.
We keep walking until we find the dressing room that says 'Buddy Holly and guest' on the door. The sign is a piece of paper hastily taped to the door with someone's messy scrawl across it.
I'm slightly offended that I'm just his 'guest', but a good chunk of the public doesn't exactly know that Buddy Holly is married. Theres been articles but most of it has been written off as heresy. People will definitely know for sure soon, I feel it.
Buddy and I duck inside and I set down his guitar case on the vanity under the lighted mirror.
Jerry pops his head inside. "Why'd you get your own room and Joe and I gotta share?"
"'Cause I got Vi?" Buddy says. "I actually don't know,"
"Okay, well, I gotta get ready to see Peggy Sue!" Jerry exclaims as he disappears.
Buddy looks at me and smiles. "Hey, at least we aren't estranged like them, right?"
I nod. "I didn't break up with you for smoking behind the band room,"
"Yeah because you did too!"
I smile. "Got me there,"
We both change out of our bus clothes (as we had to find out the hard way, you need to bring comfortable clothes to ride the bus in. Otherwise you're miserable for hours at a time).
Buddy grabs his suit bag and unzips it, revealing his grey suit that had to be ridiculously tailored in order to fit him right. He looks at it and frowns. "I hate wearing suits!"
