Calum's POV
The minute the door closed, I let out my true feelings. I didn't want to show them in front of Poppy in case it made me look any worse than I already did.
"FUCK!" I screamed out, slamming my hand against the bed. The others looked over at me, concerned, before looking between each other. "I'm gonna be in so much shit with management. We might have to hold off the end of the tour..." The others sighed.
"I don't know if they'll let us do that. We've been getting so much press and hype over this tour we really don't need to be gone again for another six months. We already took a few year break..." Michael said honestly. I shot him a glare for not making me feel any better.
"So what? You'll tour without me?" I snapped at them, receiving a few looks before everyone looked down at the floor.
"We'll have to speak to management." Ashton said, keeping it truthful. "Luke, you want me to go this time?" Luke shook his head and stood up, dialling the number on his phone as soon as he headed for the door. Once again, the moment it shut, I let my feelings out again.
"This is fucking shit."
"Look, they haven't said for sure if you're going to need surgery, Poppy was just warning you it's an option. You've got to wait for the surgeon." Ashton said, trying to make me feel a little better. It wasn't working though, but that was because I knew all this was my fault. If I hadn't have been an idiot and drunk so much, none of this would have happened. We wouldn't have been here, we'd have been having proper time off and resting until the next part of the tour. We had a couple of weeks which we were meant to be using as time to explore the countries and have fun with each other, not get stuck in a hospital bed awaiting doctors and a possible need for surgery. Management were going to kill me. Why did I get so upset that other people were happy?
A knock at the door echoed the room. It was harsher and louder than Poppy's normally was, which made me think it was going to be the doctors.
"Come in." I called out as the door swung open, a large man in scrubs walking in quickly, nodding as a greeting to my friends.
"Calum Hood?" His voice boomed, I nodded. "My name is Mr Shine. I'm the surgeon they've asked to come and assess your condition. Can you tell me how this happened?" I sighed, once again I had to tell the dumbest story of my life.
"I was out partying, drunk too much and fell down the stairs." I summarised for him.
"Is this something that happens often? You drinking too much?" Mr Shine queried. I bit my lips together to stop myself saying what I really wanted to and composed myself to answer.
"No, we were just out celebrating." I answered, knowing I could have said a lot more to him that I kept to myself.
"Right, is it okay if I examine it?" He changed the subject and I nodded. He began to feel the left foot and then moved to the right, working out what felt different from one to the other. When he got to the painful bit, I straightened in the bed and sucked a sharp breath in. He continued to touch it and move bits around despite my resistance. I began to fidget and flinch, hoping he'd been finished soon but he seemed to carry on.
"This hurts quite a bit doctor..." I said softly, trying to hold back from biting his head off.
"Well it's broken." He stated obviously as he carried on prodding around.
"Can I have some more pain relief then?" I spoke obviously back to him, fed up of people's attitudes. At no point have I told anyone who I was or what my job was but I didn't want to, I didn't want people to suddenly treat me nicely just because I was a celebrity, I wanted it because they were good at their job.
"Sure, the nurse can give it to you once I'm done. I just have to feel how your muscles and nerves are working without pain relief. This will say whether or not it's safer to try and realign it here or in surgery." Mr Shine said as he read some of my notes, finally finishing prodding at me. He got his pen and began writing, leaving us all in uncomfortable silence.
"So, what's the verdict doc?" Ashton asked humorously but the doctor wasn't impressed and just sighed as he continued to write. The door knocked lightly this time, and I called for them to come in. Poppy came in the room with the caterer, carrying a tray of lunch for me. The caterer placed it on a tray in front of me and pushed it over to my bedside, moving the top so the tray was above my stomach for me to sit and eat. The doctor paused and turned around, seeing which nurse was looking after me.
"Oh... Poppy." He said as if he was disappointed.
"Good afternoon Mr Shine." She greeted him the same as anyone else, politely and happily. "What do you think is the best course of action for Calum?" Mr Shine put his pen back in his pocket and put the notes back at the bottom of the bed.
"Mr Hood." He said as if he was correcting her. "Will definitely need surgery to correct this break. It's much too fragile to attempt a manual realignment. We will probably need to put pins in it."
"What?!" I gasped exasperated. Why couldn't he tell us that minutes ago when we had asked? And what was his issue with Poppy that was making him so blunt about it?
"Mr Shine, may we talk about this outside?" Poppy was quick to straighten and turn on her heels, storming out of the room with Mr Shine in tow behind her. The minute the door slammed shut we kept quiet, hoping to hear what she was saying. We could hear raised voices but we couldn't quite hear the words. Moments later, Luke walked back into the room with his jaw dropped open.
"Damn she's feisty." Luke said, offering me a smirk.
"What are you talking about?" I spat, scrunching my face at him.
"Poppy. She's shouting at someone outside and she is laying into him about being unprofessional or something. She's absolutely annihilating him." He said, still smirking. Was she really shouting at the doctor for me?
